Shreyas Iyer suffers rib injury after stunning catch in Sydney ODI

India’s vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been taken to hospital after suffering an injury to his left rib cage while taking a spectacular catch during the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Saturday.

The BCCI confirmed in a statement that Iyer “has been taken to hospital for further evaluation and assessment” following the incident.

The injury occurred in the 34th over of Australia’s innings, when Iyer completed a brilliant running catch to dismiss Alex Carey off the bowling of Harshit Rana. Carey attempted to hit a short delivery straight down the ground but got a top edge, sending the ball high between backward point and deep third.

Iyer sprinted from backward point and executed a full-length dive to complete the catch, landing heavily on his left side in the process. He immediately clutched his ribs in pain and received medical attention on the field before walking off with assistance.

He did not return to the field for the remainder of Australia’s innings, which ended at 236 in 46.4 overs.

Further updates on Iyer’s condition are expected after his medical assessment in Sydney.
