Renshaw Returns to Sheffield Shield in Final Push for Ashes Selection
Australian batter Matt Renshaw will make a rapid return to Sheffield Shield action for Queensland, as he looks to stake a late claim for Ashes selection ahead of the squad announcement for the first Test against England.
Renshaw, fresh off scoring his maiden ODI half-century at the SCG on Saturday, flew home immediately after the match and is set to train with Queensland before facing New South Wales this week. The clash promises to be a high-stakes encounter, with Steven Smith continuing his Ashes preparations and Sam Konstas fighting to retain his Test spot.
Renshaw Eyes Test Recall
The left-hander began the Shield season in fine form, scoring a century against Tasmania before missing the second round due to his ODI commitments. While not currently among the frontrunners for selection, Renshaw’s versatility as a top-order option keeps him in contention.
Expected to open alongside Usman Khawaja, Renshaw said he was focused on maintaining his intent across formats rather than worrying about Ashes speculation.
“I’m ready for Tuesday… I think it’s the same cricket ball, just a different colour,” Renshaw joked.
“My batting feels good — I’m moving well against pace and spin. Hopefully, I can put runs on the board and win a game for Queensland.”
Queensland will be without key quick Michael Neser, who is being rested, leaving the bowling attack thin due to injuries.
Green, Doggett Return in Perth
Meanwhile, Cameron Green will feature for Western Australia against South Australia at the WACA after missing the India ODIs with minor side soreness. Selectors have downplayed any fitness issues, but his bowling workload will be closely monitored — he has delivered only four overs so far this season, a year after recovering from back surgery.
Adding further intrigue, Brendan Doggett returns for South Australia following a hamstring injury. The paceman remains in the frame for a reserve role in the Ashes squad after being part of Australia’s World Test Championship group earlier this year.
Selection Watch Across the Country
Elsewhere, at Junction Oval, Jake Weatherald will aim to back up his impressive 94 against WA to push for a maiden Test call-up. He’ll face a strong Victorian bowling lineup, although Scott Boland is being rested.
For Tasmania, Beau Webster returns after recovering from an ankle injury. Chair of selectors George Bailey has assured Webster of his place in the Test squad, and uncertainty around Green’s bowling could strengthen his case. The 31-year-old has been in excellent touch, scoring four half-centuries in seven Shield matches in challenging conditions.
Test Contenders’ Schedules
Among other Test regulars, Travis Head and Josh Hazlewood remain with Australia’s T20I side against India. Hazlewood, who suffered a minor cut to his finger in the third ODI, will be rested after the first two T20Is to prepare for a Shield game in Sydney before the first Test. Mitchell Starc, now retired from T20Is, will also feature in that match as part of his red-ball build-up.
