New Zealand Overcome Brook’s Lone Heroics to Take 1-0 Lead Against England

A breathtaking century from Harry Brook was not enough to rescue England as New Zealand sealed a four-wicket win in the first ODI at Wellington, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Brook’s explosive 135 off 101 balls, featuring 11 sixes, dragged England from the brink of collapse to a respectable total of 223, but half-centuries from Daryl Mitchell (78)* and Michael Bracewell (51) ensured the hosts completed a confident chase with 13.2 overs to spare.

England Crumble Early Despite Brook’s Brilliance

England’s innings began disastrously after being sent in to bat. Matt Henry struck with the very first ball, bowling Jamie Smith through the gate. From there, Zakary Foulkes (4–41) and Henry combined to tear through the top order, reducing England to 5/33.

Foulkes, on debut, was unplayable with the new ball — removing Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Jacob Bethell, and Sam Curran in quick succession. England’s collapse deepened when captain Jos Buttler was dismissed cheaply, leaving them reeling at 33 for 5.

It was left to Brook and Jamie Overton to mount a counterattack. Brook struck a defiant 36-ball fifty, mixing aggression with control, while Overton added valuable support with 46 off 54 balls before falling to Jacob Duffy (3–55).

After a brief cameo from Adil Rashid, Brook went on an extraordinary hitting spree, smashing sixes at will. He added 57 runs with No.11 Luke Wood, expertly farming the strike. His onslaught — which included three sixes in an over off Duffy and another trio off Henry — finally ended on 135, when he mistimed a slog sweep off Mitchell Santner. England were bowled out for 223 in 35.2 overs.

Mitchell, Bracewell Steer Calm Chase

England struck early in defence of their modest total. Brydon Carse (3–45) removed Will Young and Kane Williamson in the same over, before Luke Wood had Rachin Ravindra caught behind. When Tom Latham fell leg-before to Carse, New Zealand were in deep trouble at 66 for 4.

But Mitchell and Bracewell combined for a match-turning 92-run stand, rebuilding with patience and precision. Both reached half-centuries, rotating the strike smartly before accelerating after the drinks break.

Bracewell’s run-out on 51 briefly opened a window for England, but Mitchell Santner (27 off 25) joined Mitchell to snuff out any remaining hope. Santner launched two sixes off Rashid before falling, and Mitchell fittingly sealed the victory with a boundary to finish unbeaten on 78.
