Rovman Powell Marks 100th T20I with Match-Winning Knock in Chattogram

West Indies captain Rovman Powell celebrated his 100th T20 International in memorable fashion, guiding his side to a 16-run victory over Bangladesh in the opening match of the series in Chattogram on Monday. Powell’s unbeaten 44 off 28 balls not only revived the West Indies innings but also earned him the Player-of-the-Match award on a special personal milestone.

Milestone Innings Built on His “Batting Template”

Powell became just the third West Indian to reach 100 T20Is, joining an elite club that includes Kieron Pollard and Nicholas Pooran. His innings was a lesson in patience and power. After struggling early—scoring just 18 runs off his first 22 balls—Powell launched a late assault, smashing 26 runs off his final six deliveries.

He hit his first six in the 19th over off Mustafizur Rahman before taking Tanzim Hasan Sakib apart in the final over with three consecutive sixes, propelling the visitors to 165 for 3 in 20 overs.

“I am very happy. It’s not every day someone gets to play 100 T20Is for West Indies,” Powell said. “It shows the hard work I’ve put in over the years. Getting the Man-of-the-Match award in my 100th game makes it even more special. I just stuck to my batting template—build an innings and finish strong in the last five overs.”

Bowlers Hold Firm Despite Dew

Despite heavy dew making conditions tricky, West Indies’ bowlers maintained composure to bowl Bangladesh out for 149, securing a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Powell praised his attack for sticking to their plans under pressure.

“It was very wet in the end. If one of Bangladesh’s main batters had stayed longer, we could’ve been under pressure,” he said. “Credit to our bowlers for taking wickets at crucial times.”

Bangladesh Falter After Early Collapse

Bangladesh’s chase faltered early as they lost four wickets in the powerplay and their top order by the 12th over. Young pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib top-scored with 33, later admitting the team’s poor start cost them.

“If we had one set batsman towards the end, the chase could’ve been manageable,” Tanzim said. “Losing four wickets early made it difficult.”

Powell Eyes Series Win to End Losing Streak

The victory gives West Indies a chance to end their seven-series losing streak in T20I bilaterals. Powell urged his team to stay focused ahead of Wednesday’s second match.

“Whatever the stats say, it doesn’t leave a good taste. We’re eager to turn it around,” he said. “Being 1-0 up gives us the opportunity to win a series after a long time. Bangladesh are tough at home, but we’ll look to finish the job.”
