Khawaja in Form for Queensland as Ashes Near

Usman Khawaja struck a fluent 87 for Queensland against New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield, finding timely form just three weeks before the Ashes series begins.

Queensland closed day three at 238 for 4, still 191 runs behind NSW’s imposing first-innings total of 429 for 7 declared. With just one day remaining and a washed-out opening day, the match appears headed for a draw at the Gabba.

After a lean run in Tests last winter, where he averaged only 15.37 across four matches, Khawaja’s innings was a welcome return to touch for Australia’s veteran opener. The 38-year-old looked composed throughout his knock, dispatching Ryan Hadley for three early boundaries and producing a trademark straight drive later in the session. He also played Nathan Lyon confidently, clipping the offspinner through midwicket twice and sweeping him for another four.

Just as a century seemed within reach, Khawaja fell in familiar fashion — edging Charlie Stobo to the slips as the seamer angled one across and found late movement.

At the other end, Jack Clayton provided strong support and remains unbeaten on 81, helping Queensland solidify their reply. His effort has effectively ended NSW’s chances of forcing a result; they would now need to dismiss Queensland for under 280, enforce the follow-on, and bowl them out again on the final day.

Among Queensland’s other batters, Matt Renshaw made a start before falling for 29, chopping a Jack Edwards delivery onto his stumps while attempting to leave. Marnus Labuschagne, meanwhile, was dismissed cheaply for 4, glancing Liam Hatcher to a deep leg gully.

Australia’s selectors are set to name an extended squad for the first Ashes Test in Perth once this Shield round concludes. Renshaw remains in contention for an opener’s spot, competing with Jake Weatherald. Selection will depend on the final balance of the XI — whether both Beau Webster and Cameron Green play, or if a specialist opener is preferred.

Labuschagne, despite his brief stay, appears a certain inclusion in the Perth squad after an excellent start to the domestic season. His role — either as No. 3 or a makeshift opener — could hinge on the final team composition.

With Khawaja’s form returning at the right time, Australia’s selectors will be encouraged by the left-hander’s resilience and touch ahead of a high-stakes Ashes summer.
