Daryl Mitchell Replaces Rohit Sharma as No. 1 Ranked ODI Batter

New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell has risen to the top of the ICC ODI batting rankings, dislodging India captain Rohit Sharma to claim the No. 1 spot. Mitchell becomes only the second New Zealand batter in history to reach the summit, following Glenn Turner’s achievement in 1979.

Despite a rich batting legacy that includes Martin Crowe, Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor, none of New Zealand’s modern greats have previously held the No. 1 ODI ranking. Mitchell’s elevation comes on the back of his seventh ODI century, scored against West Indies on Sunday. However, the innings came at a cost as he suffered an injury that has ruled him out of the remainder of the series.

In the Test rankings, South Africa captain Temba Bavuma has broken into the top five for the first time. His gritty half-century in extremely challenging conditions at Eden Gardens played a key role in South Africa ending a 15-year stretch without a Test win in India. Injured India batter Shubman Gill sits just outside the top 10 with 737 rating points.

England’s Joe Root continues to lead the Test batting rankings, with teammate Harry Brook in second place ahead of the Ashes opener on Friday.

Among Test bowlers, South Africa’s Marco Jansen has climbed to the brink of the top 10 following his impactful performance in Kolkata, and he has also entered the top five in the allrounder rankings. Jasprit Bumrah remains the world’s top-ranked Test bowler after taking six wickets at Eden Gardens, followed by Matt Henry and Noman Ali.

In ODIs, Pakistan’s 3-0 whitewash of Sri Lanka has boosted legspinner Abrar Ahmed, who has surged 11 places to No. 9 in the bowling rankings. Rashid Khan continues to lead the ODI bowlers’ list, trailed by Jofra Archer and Keshav Maharaj.

New Zealand pacer Jacob Duffy’s impressive wicket-taking spree during the November T20I series against West Indies has propelled him to No. 2 in the T20I bowling rankings. He sits between leader Varun Chakravarthy and third-placed Rashid Khan.

India continue to dominate the ODI batting top tier, with four players—Rohit Sharma (No. 2), Shubman Gill (No. 4), Virat Kohli (No. 5) and Shreyas Iyer (No. 8)—all inside the top 10. Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran occupies the No. 3 position.
