Thunder Break Winless Streak with Dominant Nine-Wicket Victory Over Scorchers
Sydney Thunder revived their WBBL campaign with a commanding nine-wicket win over the Perth Scorchers at Drummoyne Oval, snapping a three-game losing streak to stay in the hunt for a finals push.
Chasing 151 for victory, Thunder eased to 154 for 1 with ten balls remaining, thanks to a composed, unbeaten 55 off 44 balls from Tahlia Wilson. Partner Phoebe Litchfield sealed the match in style, smashing a six to bring up her 35-ball fifty, while Georgia Voll set the tone early with an assertive 43 off 31.
Thunder, who began the season with three straight defeats, remain seventh on the ladder but now carry momentum ahead of Friday’s clash with bottom-placed Brisbane.
Wilson was given an early reprieve when Freya Kemp spilled a straightforward chance with the opener on five, and she capitalised fully. Voll dominated the early scoring before falling caught behind, allowing Wilson to take charge of the chase. The innings marked just her third WBBL half-century in 80 matches, despite being last season’s leading run-scorer in the WNCL.
Earlier, Perth opener Katie Mack kept her side afloat with a powerful 79, an innings that began with a slice of luck when she was dropped first ball by Heather Knight at slip. Mack struck Voll for three consecutive boundaries and drove fluently through the covers, but lacked support as no other Scorchers batter passed 20.
The visitors’ innings stalled in the 12th over when Kemp was run out and Paige Schofield trapped lbw in consecutive deliveries, contributing to Perth’s total of 150 for 7, which ultimately proved insufficient once Thunder’s top order found their rhythm.
The victory marks a timely resurgence for Sydney as they look to climb the table and reignite their WBBL season.
