Jewell’s Century Steadies Tasmania After Double Substitution Drama
Caleb Jewell struck a superb century to guide Tasmania to a strong position in their Sheffield Shield clash against New South Wales, overcoming early setbacks caused by two forced substitutions. Jewell’s 102 helped the visitors reach 196 for 2 at stumps on day two, trailing NSW’s 391 for 9 declared.
Tasmania’s preparations were thrown off course on the opening day when allrounder Aidan O'Connor suffered a concussion and Mitch Owen sustained a leg injury. Under the competition’s new injury-substitution rules, Jackson Bird and Charlie Wakim were brought in, with Wakim eligible to bat.
In a surprise move, Tasmania opened with left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann, who impressed with a composed 21 in a 56-run stand with Jewell. The opener dominated with authoritative strokeplay, especially through his pull shot, finding the boundary 11 times. His fluent innings—his first Shield century of the season and ninth in first-class cricket—came at an important moment, filling the void left by Jake Weatherald, who is away on Test debut duty.
Jewell found further support from Tim Ward, who ended the day unbeaten on 53 as Tasmania consolidated after early disruptions.
Earlier, NSW resumed on 214 for 2 following a rain-hit opening day. Kurtis Patterson added just a single before being run out for 80, triggering a steady fall of wickets. Despite Tasmania chipping away, Lachlan Shaw and Josh Philippe helped NSW reach a competitive total before declaring.
Tasmania fast bowler Riley Meredith was the pick of the attack, claiming 3 for 77. His haul took him to 15 wickets from just five innings this season, continuing an impressive run of consistency. Meredith, who collected a career-best 23 wickets last Shield campaign, appears to be rediscovering the form that earned him Australia caps in both ODIs and T20Is.
With Jewell’s century anchoring their reply, Tasmania head into day three well placed to mount a strong challenge.
