Chaudhary Smashes Maiden Sheffield Shield Ton as Tasmania Pile Up 623

Nikhil Chaudhary carved his name into Sheffield Shield history on Monday, becoming the first Indian player this century to score a Shield hundred as Tasmania amassed a commanding 623 for 8 declared against New South Wales at Sydney’s Cricket Central.

Chaudhary hammered a superb 163 from 184 balls, featuring five sixes—including four slog-sweeps off Tanveer Sangha in the final hour—and put Tasmania in complete control of the match. His onslaught helped the visitors build a hefty 232-run lead before declaring late on day three.

NSW openers Sam Konstas and Ryan Hicks survived the five overs before stumps, reaching 9 without loss, but face a monumental task to save the game.

The innings continued Tasmania’s batting dominance across two days. After Caleb Jewell’s century on Sunday, both Tim Ward and Chaudhary reached three figures on Monday as Tasmania compiled their second-highest total in Shield history. Ward produced a fluent 119—his first red-ball hundred of the summer—driving strongly through the off side before becoming the second centurion of the day.

But it was Chaudhary’s breakthrough that stood out. Born in Delhi, the spin-bowling allrounder moved to Australia in 2020 and remained through the pandemic, later earning permanent residency while continuing to hold Indian citizenship. He was discovered by Tasmania assistant coach James Hopes while playing club cricket in Queensland and was recruited for the Hobart Hurricanes before shifting to Tasmania last season.

Chaudhary has quickly made an impact in red-ball cricket, taking a five-wicket haul on debut last month against Queensland. His performance on Monday—punishing Sangha and bringing up his 150 with a massive hit onto the grandstand roof—further underlined his emergence.

Only a handful of Indian players have previously played in the Sheffield Shield, with Rusi Surti scoring a century and taking a hat-trick for Queensland in the 1970s. Chaudhary is now the first Indian batter to score a Shield hundred since then.

Bradley Hope missed his chance to join Jewell, Ward and Chaudhary as centurions when he cut a loose ball from Sangha to point. Tasmania entered the round last on the ladder with one win, two losses and a draw, but now sit in a dominant position as they push for a crucial victory.
