‘No Fight, No Plan’: Bird and Bell Crush NSW as Tasmania Seal Innings Victory
Tasmania stormed to an emphatic innings-and-58-run win over New South Wales, with veteran seamer Jackson Bird and strike partner Gabe Bell spearheading a ruthless bowling display on the final day of their Sheffield Shield clash at Cricket Central.
In a match where neither side managed to take all ten wickets in the first innings, NSW folded under relentless pressure, bowled out for 174 in 92 overs. The collapse marked the first outright result at Cricket Central, with the previous four Shield fixtures at the venue ending in draws.
NSW were cruising at 102 for 2, but lost 8 for 41 in a dramatic slide triggered by Bell, who produced a devastating over to remove Josh Philippe, Charlie Stobo and Tanveer Sangha. Captain Jack Edwards fought hard, making 38 off 137, and combined with No. 11 Liam Hatcher (8* off 79) for a stubborn 28-over stand before Riley Meredith finally ended the resistance by hitting off stump.
Bird, who removed Sam Konstas and Kurtis Patterson, continued to build on his extraordinary first-class career, climbing to 421 Shield wickets—the fourth-highest tally in competition history, behind Clarrie Grimmett (513), Michael Kasprowicz (441) and Andy Bichel (430). Patterson, who made 80 in the first innings, could manage only 1 in the second as Tasmania captain Jordan Silk pulled off a superb catch in the slips.
Konstas, dropped from Australia’s Test side after a tough tour of the Caribbean, continues to search for form in domestic cricket. He will feature for the PM’s XI against England Lions in Canberra this weekend.
Former NSW coach Phil Jaques delivered a blunt assessment during commentary:
“In the second innings there’s been no fight, no plan and no effort… There’s got to be some application, some fight.”
Tasmania had earlier taken full advantage of a strong batting surface, piling on 623 for 8 declared, with Nikhil Chaudhary, Tim Ward and Caleb Jewell all scoring centuries. The dominant performance lifts the Tigers to their second win of the season and keeps NSW searching for answers after a disappointing collapse.
