Harmer’s Six-For Hands India Their Biggest Test Defeat as South Africa Seal Historic 2-0 Sweep

South Africa completed a dominant 2-0 series victory over India, sealing their first Test series win in the country in 25 years and handing the hosts their heaviest defeat by runs in Test history. The triumph, played out in front of sparse crowds at India’s newest Test venue in the east, also marked India’s second home series loss in 12 months after more than a decade of invincibility.

Simon Harmer was the architect of India’s collapse, producing a career-defining performance. The offspinner collected 17 wickets at a staggering average of 8.94 — the best figures recorded by any bowler in a Test series in India. Marco Jansen, who claimed 12 wickets at 10.08, also played a vital role and ended the contest with a stunning one-handed, over-the-shoulder catch that sealed the match and series.

The result seemed unimaginable earlier in the series, even after Shubman Gill joked about his poor luck with tosses. But India’s campaign quickly spiralled: Gill was injured within minutes of the second Test, and the hosts went on to lose both matches, leaving their World Test Championship (WTC) final hopes under threat. With only 48.15% of possible points secured midway through their campaign, India now face a steep climb — previous finalists have needed at least 60% to qualify. South Africa, meanwhile, strengthened their title defence with a commanding 75% points tally. Captain Temba Bavuma remains unbeaten after 12 Tests in charge.

The final day began with India needing to bat out time, but the pitch — offering turn and natural variation — left them vulnerable to Harmer and Jansen. Despite early fortune for B Sai Sudharsan and nightwatchman Kuldeep Yadav, the breakthrough came soon after. Harmer bowled Kuldeep with an offbreak that held its line, then removed Dhruv Jurel in the same over with drift and subtle variation.

Rishabh Pant’s typically aggressive instincts worked against him as he fell to extra bounce from Harmer, with Aiden Markram continuing his extraordinary catching performance. Sudharsan and Ravindra Jadeja briefly resisted before more wickets tumbled after tea. Harmer, returning refreshed, dismissed Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy in quick succession, with Markram taking a record-breaking ninth catch in the match.

Jadeja battled for a half-century but could not prevent the inevitable, eventually stumped advancing at Keshav Maharaj. The final wicket fittingly went to Jansen, whose athletic catch in the deep ended India’s misery and capped a series in which he contributed with bat, ball, and brilliance in the field.

South Africa’s comprehensive sweep, achieved on traditionally challenging Indian surfaces, marks one of their most significant overseas triumphs and leaves India facing pressing questions as the WTC race tightens.
