Saudi Arabia to Host New Women’s World T20 Challenge From 2026 in Landmark FairBreak Partnership
Saudi Arabia is set to host its first-ever professional women’s cricket tournament after Saudi Cricket and FairBreak announced a five-year partnership to launch the Women’s World T20 Challenge beginning in 2026. The event will feature players from more than 35 countries, marking a major expansion of women’s cricket in the region.
The tournament represents FairBreak’s return to global women’s cricket after previously staging the FairBreak Global Invitational T20 in Dubai (2022) and Hong Kong (2023). A planned 2023 edition in the USA was postponed to 2024 before being cancelled altogether.
Backed by ICC-Sanctioned FairBreak Legacy
FairBreak, founded in 2013 with a mission to promote gender equality in sport, had operated fully ICC-sanctioned events featuring top-tier talent including Chamari Athapaththu, Sophie Ecclestone, Laura Wolvaardt, and Marizanne Kapp. However, Indian players did not participate due to the BCCI’s denial of No-Objection Certificates—a situation still unclear for the new Saudi-based league.
Aligned with Saudi Vision 2030
The announcement emphasised that the Women’s World T20 Challenge aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, with aims to:
-
Develop women’s cricket talent through structured pathways
-
Inspire participation among young women and enhance public awareness
-
Encourage international collaboration
-
Showcase a diverse playing field with athletes from over 35 nations
Saudi Arabia’s Growing Cricket Footprint
The new league adds to Saudi Arabia’s expanding involvement in cricket:
-
The IPL auction was held in Jeddah in 2024
-
The country has shown interest in supporting a Grand Slam-style global T20 circuit
-
Future editions of the ILT20 are expected to include matches hosted in Saudi Arabia
The Women’s World T20 Challenge is poised to significantly elevate Saudi Arabia’s profile in the global cricket ecosystem while offering a new platform for women’s cricket development and international competition.
