Markram-Led South Africa Choose to Bowl as India Hand Gaikwad a Start in Ranchi ODI
India’s uncanny streak of bad luck at the toss continued on Sunday as they lost their 19th consecutive ODI toss, with South Africa’s stand-in captain Aiden Markram opting to bowl first in conditions expected to produce heavy dew later in the evening. This match also marked India’s third ODI of the tour with a third different captain, but the toss result stayed the same as KL Rahul joined the list of unlucky skippers.
South Africa made significant changes of their own, with regular captain Temba Bavuma sitting out after feeling unwell. Markram stepped in to lead, while spinner Keshav Maharaj was also rested. Their revised XI included only two spin options—Prenelan Subrayen and Markram—while Bavuma’s absence allowed both Ryan Rickelton and Quinton de Kock to feature in the lineup. The pace attack was bolstered by left-arm quicks Marco Jansen and Nandre Burger, supported by Ottneil Baartman.
India opted for what appeared to be a bold selection strategy. Harshit Rana was slotted in at No. 8, ahead of three specialist bowlers—Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna. The decision meant dropping allrounder Nitish Kumar Reddy in favour of deploying two spin allrounders, Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja. Washington took over the No. 5 role from Axar Patel, with Rahul, also doubling as wicketkeeper, positioned at No. 6.
