Dane van Niekerk Aims to ‘Prove to Myself’ Ahead of International Comeback
Former South Africa captain Dane van Niekerk says her upcoming international return is driven by a desire to “prove something to myself,” as she prepares to face Ireland on Friday at Newlands. The match marks her first appearance for South Africa since retiring from international cricket in 2023 — a decision she reversed in August.
Van Niekerk, who has been playing domestic cricket at Newlands with Western Province, said the comeback feels surreal.
"I didn't think the day would come. It means a lot. It means the world. I got my clothes again — it felt like my clothes for the first time. I got a new helmet as well. I was like a child," she said during a pre-tour camp in Cape Town.
Form Fuels Recall
The 31-year-old has been one of the standout performers in domestic cricket this summer. She is the fourth-highest run-scorer in the one-day competition, seventh in the T20s, and has struck four fifties in her last seven innings across formats. Though she has not bowled yet, she said she is “crossing fingers” her bowling will return soon.
Despite her impressive form, she insisted the comeback is not about proving anything to others.
"That's the main goal — just proving to myself that I can really tick those boxes… If I tick those boxes, I will contribute to the team."
Adaptation and Leadership
Van Niekerk acknowledged that much has changed within the squad since her last appearance but believes she can still add value.
"The intensity is through the roof… whether it's knowledge, tactics, chats about cricket, with the bat or in the field — if I can contribute in a positive manner, I'd be happy."
Her journey back began with signing for Western Province last season with the intention to mentor younger players. She emphasised that the decision was not financially motivated. A conversation with head coach Mandla Mashimbyi convinced her to continue, eventually reigniting her ambition to return to the international arena.
She credited her personal growth to processing difficult emotions, including the passing of her father six months ago.
Supporting From the Sidelines
Even during her absence from the national side, she stayed close to the team, often supporting her wife, Marizanne Kapp, who played in South Africa’s three recent World Cup finals.
"Obviously, I wish I was there… walking out in India for a World Cup final — that's the moment you live for."
Eyeing a World Cup Breakthrough
Van Niekerk believes South Africa are on the cusp of their biggest achievement yet.
"I think this team is due a World Cup. Whether I'll be part of it or not, it doesn't matter… this group of players is due to lift the Cup."
Her comeback adds experience, depth, and emotional drive to a South African side aiming for new heights in the international arena.
