Turner, Whiteman Lead WA to Dominant Win as Victoria Slip to Bottom of One-Day Cup Standings
Western Australia have surged to a seven-wicket victory over Victoria at Melbourne’s Junction Oval, leaving the hosts anchored to the bottom of the One-Day Cup ladder and in danger of falling out of contention for the Dean Jones Trophy.
Despite enjoying strong form in the Sheffield Shield, the Vics have struggled in the 50-over format and now hold a 1–4 record. Their latest defeat came after WA chased down a target of 285 with ease, sealing the result with 32 balls to spare.
Victoria’s innings was built on steady contributions rather than a defining standout score. Sam Harper (54), Oliver Peake (54), and Tom Rogers (50) all passed fifty but failed to convert their starts into match-shaping totals. WA’s Joel Paris proved the chief destroyer, claiming 4 for 62, while young quick Albert Esterhuysen chimed in with the wicket of Peake just as the hosts eyed a push beyond 300.
WA’s chase began shakily with white-ball star Mitchell Marsh dismissed for 17 by Xavier Crone. But opener Joel Curtis steadied the innings with an attacking 68 off 64 balls, setting a strong platform for the visitors.
From 3 for 141, captain Ashton Turner and Sam Whiteman took complete control. The experienced pair compiled an unbeaten 148-run partnership, guiding WA home comfortably. Turner struck a commanding 71 from 61 deliveries, while Whiteman’s assured 70 from 65 balls sealed the victory with a crisp cover drive to the boundary.
Western Australia head into the BBL break with a 2–3 record, while Victoria will look to respond quickly when the sides meet again on Thursday in their upcoming Sheffield Shield clash at the MCG.
