Wareham’s All-Round Brilliance Lifts Renegades Over Sixers, Keeps Finals Hopes Alive
Georgia Wareham delivered a standout all-round performance as the Melbourne Renegades defeated the Sydney Sixers to keep their WBBL title defence alive, producing a composed chase and crucial wickets in a high-stakes clash in Melbourne.
The result ended the Sixers’ three-match winning streak and confirmed the Hobart Hurricanes as minor premiers, guaranteeing them hosting rights for next Saturday’s final. Adelaide now faces Hobart at Karen Rolton Oval tonight, needing an upset win to stay in the top-four race.
Renegades Climb to Fourth
The Renegades’ victory in their final regular-season match lifted them from sixth to fourth on the ladder, though they must now wait on weekend results to determine whether they qualify for the finals. The Sixers remain in third.
Chasing 131, the Renegades were in early trouble at 49 for 4 before Wareham (49* off 29) and Courtney Webb (33* off 23) combined for a match-winning 85-run unbeaten stand, steering the side home at 134 for 4 in 16.2 overs.
Wareham’s late surge included five fours and two sixes, while Webb found the boundary four times in a composed supporting role.
Perry Shines but Sixers Falter
Earlier, Sixers captain Ellyse Perry starred with a commanding 65 off 47 featuring nine fours and a six. But with little support beyond Ash Gardner’s 16, the Sixers limped to 130 for 9.
Wareham’s legspin caused major damage, returning 3 for 21, while Alice Capsey added 2 for 27, including the key wicket of Perry in the 18th over.
Alyssa Healy fell for a six-ball duck, and the Sixers’ middle order never recovered against disciplined Renegades bowling.
A Rocky Start Before the Comeback
Renegades’ chase began poorly when Maitlan Brown struck twice in the second over. Davina Perrin (28) and Capsey briefly steadied the innings before both fell in quick succession, setting up the Wareham-Webb rescue act. Brown finished as the Sixers’ only multiple wicket-taker with 2 for 45.
Finals Race Tightens
With the ladder still fluid, all remaining weekend games carry finals implications.
