Victoria Tighten Grip on Shield Clash Despite Gannon’s Five-For
Victoria strengthened their hold on their Sheffield Shield contest against Western Australia at the MCG, ending day two in a commanding position despite a spirited five-wicket haul from WA veteran Cameron Gannon.
After beginning the day with a 61-run first-innings advantage, Victoria posted 255 in reply to WA’s 194, and then struck a decisive blow in the final over of play.
Perry Strikes Late as WA Stumble Again
On the last ball of the third over of WA’s second innings, Victorian quick Mitchell Perry trapped former Test opener Cameron Bancroft lbw for a crucial breakthrough, leaving WA wobbling at 1 for 4.
With the top order under pressure, WA opted for nightwatchman Corey Rocchiccioli instead of allrounder Mitch Marsh. Rocchiccioli and captain Sam Whiteman survived the remaining overs, closing on 1 for 5, still 56 runs behind Victoria.
Whiteman managed just 2 off 24 balls, but his resistance ensured WA avoided deeper trouble against a charged-up Victorian attack.
Macdonald and Short Lift Victoria
On a challenging MCG surface, opener Blake Macdonald led the way for Victoria with a composed 79, while Matthew Short added a valuable 62. The home side batted deliberately, occupying the crease for 96 overs at just 2.68 runs per over, prioritising scoreboard pressure over speed.
Gannon was the standout for WA, claiming 5 for 47 in a sustained 23-over spell. Rocchiccioli finished with 2 for 61, removing Short and later closing out the innings.
Victoria Continue Dominant Shield Campaign
Despite mixed results in white-ball formats, including a heavy One-Day Cup loss to WA earlier in the week, Victoria have been the benchmark side in this season’s Shield competition. Another victory here would take them to five wins from six matches, firmly positioning them to host the Shield final after the Big Bash League break.
In contrast, WA remain bottom of the table, managing just one win so far this campaign and facing a steep climb to revive their season.
