Stobo’s Stunning Spell Puts NSW in Command at the SCG
New South Wales have taken a commanding grip on their Sheffield Shield clash at the SCG, overwhelming an under-strength Queensland side with a dominant performance across the opening two days.
After declaring at 7 for 471 midway through day two, the Blues ripped through Queensland’s brittle batting line-up to leave the visitors reeling at 7 for 67 at stumps on Saturday — still 404 runs behind.
The damage was done by pace bowler Charlie Stobo, whose devastating spell of 4 for 7 triggered a dramatic collapse. Queensland tumbled from 2 for 43 to 6 for 58, unable to withstand Stobo’s relentless accuracy and movement.
Earlier in the day, NSW captain Jack Edwards fell agonisingly short of a fourth first-class century, dismissed for 95 by former Australian legspinner Mitch Swepson. Only wicketkeeper Ryan Hicks failed to reach a fifty among the Blues’ top seven.
A major highlight for the home side came on Friday when Sam Konstas, recently dropped from the Australian setup, struck a confidence-restoring century — his first for NSW since October 2024.
Queensland entered the match weakened by significant absences. Strike quick Michael Neser is on national Test duty, while Xavier Bartlett is away with Australia A. Their batting stocks are similarly depleted, missing Matt Renshaw (Australia A), Usman Khawaja (injured), and Marnus Labuschagne, who has been recalled to the Test squad.
NSW, sitting fifth on the ladder and with only one win from five matches, are pushing hard for a much-needed rebound following last week’s humbling defeat to Tasmania at Cricket Central, where they collapsed on a benign final-day pitch.
With Queensland seven wickets down and facing a mountain of runs, NSW appear firmly on track for a crucial Sheffield Shield victory.
