Mooney’s Masterclass Sends Scorchers to WBBL Finals as Heat End Season Winless
Perth Scorchers are headed back to the WBBL finals after a brilliant unbeaten 94 from Beth Mooney guided them to a crucial seven-wicket win over the Brisbane Heat at the WACA on Saturday. The result also ended the Melbourne Renegades’ title defence and confirmed the Heat as the first team in WBBL history to finish a season without a win.
Chasing 165 in a must-win clash, Mooney delivered under pressure once again, crafting her 94 from 61 balls and striking 12 boundaries in a composed, near-flawless innings. Perth reached the target with four balls remaining, securing a home final and moving into second on the ladder.
Hobart Hurricanes have already locked in top spot and hosting rights for next Saturday night’s final at Ninja Stadium. The Scorchers and Melbourne Stars are also assured of finals berths, while Sunday’s clash between the Sydney Sixers and Adelaide Strikers at North Sydney Oval will determine the final team to qualify.
Under the WBBL finals format, third and fourth will meet in Tuesday’s eliminator, with the winner advancing to face the second-placed team on Thursday for a place in the decider.
The Stars missed the chance to secure second place earlier on Saturday after a heavy defeat to the Sydney Thunder at Junction Oval. Perth will remain second if the Strikers beat the Sixers on Sunday.
Brisbane had set a competitive 164 for 7 thanks largely to Georgia Redmayne’s composed 57, but Mooney quickly took control of the chase. Supported by Maddy Darke (24) and Sophie Devine (13), and with Freya Kemp adding crucial late runs, the Scorchers held firm despite a brief wobble.
Mooney, the WBBL’s all-time leading run-scorer, continues her dominant season with scores of 105, 75 and now 94*. She shapes as one of the most dangerous players heading into the finals.
