Macdonald’s Maiden Ton Seals Thrilling Final-Day Victory for Victoria
Victoria pulled off a superb final-day run chase at the MCG to defeat Western Australia by six wickets, securing their fifth win in six Sheffield Shield matches and strengthening their position at the top of the table heading into the BBL break.
Set 195 for victory late on day four, Victoria were in early trouble at 46 for 3 after captain Peter Handscomb fell for a duck. But opener Blake Macdonald produced a breakout performance, crafting his maiden first-class century and guiding his side home with an unbeaten 109 off just 116 balls.
Macdonald, who also top-scored with 79 in Victoria’s first innings, claimed Player of the Match honours in only his second Shield appearance of the season. After being dropped in October, he entered the match averaging just 26.23 with a top score of 61 — but departed it as the architect of one of Victoria’s most composed chases in recent years.
His 137-run partnership with Australia white-ball star Matt Short, who struck 62 in each innings, turned the match decisively. With overs dwindling after tea, Victoria lifted their scoring rate to five an over, timing their push perfectly to avoid a draw and clinch victory in the final minutes of play.
Western Australia had earlier staged an impressive fightback of their own. Trailing heavily after falling to 52 for 4 in their second innings, captain Sam Whiteman played a superb hand, scoring his 17th first-class century before falling for 103. Valuable contributions from Hilton Cartwright (43), Aaron Hardie (33), and Joel Curtis (28) carried WA to 255, giving their bowlers a total to defend.
Victoria’s Sam Elliott, who took 5 for 33 in the first innings and bowled tirelessly throughout, delivered one of the finest performances of his career.
However, it was a disappointing return to Shield cricket for Mitchell Marsh, who managed only 4 and 9 in his two innings as he sought to push his case for a Test recall.
The loss leaves Western Australia anchored to the bottom of the ladder and all but out of finals contention with four matches remaining, while Victoria head into the competition’s hiatus firmly in control of their destiny.
