Tribe Hits Century, Bethell Strengthens Ashes Claim in England Lions Fightback
England Lions mounted a spirited recovery on day three of their clash against Australia A in Brisbane, with Jacob Bethell and Asa Tribe leading the charge after an early collapse at Allan Border Field.
Bethell, who is pushing for an Ashes recall, struck a determined 71, showcasing the resilience that could put him back in contention for England’s third Test against Australia on December 17 at the Adelaide Oval. The left-hander last featured in a Test in August, when England lost a thriller to India at The Oval, and with uncertainty around Ollie Pope’s No.3 spot, Bethell’s form has come at an opportune moment. He currently averages 38.71 from four Tests since debuting late last year.
England Lions were reeling at 29 for 3, but Bethell combined with Tribe to steady the ship. The duo added 169 for the fourth wicket, with Tribe going on to register his third first-class century. The Jersey international, who has experience across five ODIs and 26 T20Is, showed impressive composure against a strong Australia A attack featuring Jhye Richardson, Xavier Bartlett, Fergus O’Neill, Beau Webster, and Todd Murphy.
Tribe remained unbeaten as the Lions reached 274 for 6 at stumps, still 148 runs behind Australia A’s imposing first-innings total.
O’Neill was the standout bowler for the hosts, claiming 4 for 53 from 17 overs in the second innings. Earlier in the day, Australia A declared at 588 for 8, built around captain Nathan McSweeney’s career-best 226 not out.
The match remains firmly in Australia A’s control, but Bethell and Tribe’s partnership provided England Lions with a much-needed boost—and perhaps England’s Test selectors with something to think about.
