South Africa Name 15-Man Squad for Under-19 World Cup; Drawn in Group D with West Indies, Afghanistan and Tanzania
South Africa have announced a 15-man squad for the ICC Under-19 World Cup, with allrounder Muhammed Bulbulia appointed captain for the tournament, which will be held in Namibia and Zimbabwe from January 15 to February 6 next year.
Bulbulia, one of the standout performers in recent youth competitions, will lead a promising group aiming to deliver South Africa’s first Under-19 World Cup title since their lone triumph in 2014.
South Africa have been placed in Group D alongside West Indies, Afghanistan and Tanzania — a competitive pool that will test the squad from the outset.
Preparations with Youth ODIs Against India
Before the World Cup begins, the team will fine-tune their preparations with a three-match Youth ODI series against India at Willowmoore Park in Benoni from January 5 to 7.
Coach Maketa Applauds Growth and Professionalism
Head coach Malibongwe Maketa praised the squad's development over the years, highlighting both their maturity and improved cricketing standards.
“What has impressed me most is the growth these players have shown,” Maketa said. “From meeting them as 16-year-olds to seeing who they are now, it’s clear we’re developing not just cricketers, but good young men."
He added that the squad’s understanding of international intensity and their enhanced training habits have bolstered confidence ahead of the event.
“I’m very confident in this group. The culture built on hard work, resilience and putting the team first gives me real belief.”
Tournament Opener on January 16
South Africa will kick off their World Cup campaign on January 16, taking on Afghanistan at the HP Oval in Windhoek.
