Keshav Maharaj Appointed Pretoria Capitals Captain for Upcoming SA20 Season

South Africa spinner Keshav Maharaj has been named the new captain of the Pretoria Capitals for the upcoming 2025–26 SA20 season, replacing Rilee Rossouw. Maharaj, who previously captained Durban Super Giants, joins a revamped leadership group as Capitals look to revive their tournament fortunes.

In a statement on Friday, the franchise said Maharaj brought “a wealth of international pedigree across formats” and praised his “composure, clarity and intent” as a leader.

“Having captained South Africa in white-ball cricket and served as a senior figure within the national setup, Maharaj’s tactical understanding and consistency make him an invaluable addition in this role,” the team said. “His presence strengthens the balance and direction of the Pretoria Capitals squad heading into the new season.”

New coaching structure under Ganguly

The Capitals will enter the season with a completely refreshed setup. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has taken over as head coach, replacing Jonathan Trott, with former South Africa skipper Shaun Pollock appointed as his assistant.

Big auction purse, big signings

The franchise entered the September auction with the biggest purse—32.5 million Rand (US$1.85m)—and 16 slots to fill. Their headline signing was young batting sensation Dewald Brevis, for whom they paid 16.5 million Rand (US$945,000), breaking the SA20 salary record.

Maharaj was among their major acquisitions, alongside Lungi Ngidi, Lizaad Williams, Craig Overton, Saqib Mahmood, and Codi Yusuf. The side also picked up West Indies star Andre Russell as a wild card shortly after his decision to retire from the IPL and join KKR’s coaching staff. Will Jacks and Sherfane Rutherford returned as pre-auction retentions.

Capitals aim for turnaround

Pretoria Capitals have experienced fluctuating fortunes in the SA20. They topped the league stage in the inaugural season before finishing runners-up to Sunrisers Eastern Cape. However, the following two campaigns (2023–24 and 2024–25) saw them finish fifth, missing the playoffs both years.

With a new captain, a new coaching staff, and a high-profile squad overhaul, the franchise hopes for a stronger showing in the upcoming edition.

Season begins December 26

The 2025–26 SA20 season starts on December 26, with MI Cape Town facing Durban’s Super Giants in the opener. Pretoria Capitals begin their campaign on December 27 against Joburg Super Kings.
The final is scheduled for January 25, 2026.
