Green Cleared to Bowl in IPL 2026 After Registration Mix-Up

Australia allrounder Cameron Green has confirmed he will be fully available to bowl in the 2026 Indian Premier League, revealing that his listing as a batter for the upcoming auction was the result of an administrative error by his manager.

Green, 26, is set to be one of the headline acts at Tuesday’s IPL auction in Abu Dhabi, despite being registered as a batter rather than an allrounder. The Australian said the designation was due to his manager “accidentally selecting the wrong box” during the registration process.

“I’ll be good to bowl,” Green said ahead of Australia’s training session in Adelaide on Sunday. “There was a stuff-up on his end. He didn’t mean to say ‘batter’. It’s pretty funny how it’s all played out, but it was actually a mistake.”

Green missed the 2025 IPL season while recovering from back surgery and initially returned to international cricket in June as a specialist batter. However, he has since been cleared to bowl and is currently being used as a full allrounder by Australia in the ongoing Ashes series.

Having previously represented Mumbai Indians in 2023 and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2024, Green is widely tipped to be the most expensive player at this year’s auction. Some estimates suggest he could surpass the INR 27 crore mark set by Rishabh Pant last year as the highest-ever IPL bid. Kolkata Knight Riders are considered favourites to secure his services, holding the largest available purse.

Green has entered the auction with a base price of INR 2 crore. His debut IPL season with Mumbai Indians was highly successful, yielding 452 runs — including an unbeaten 47-ball century — and six wickets. After being traded to RCB in 2024, he finished the season with 255 runs and 10 wickets from 13 matches.

The Australian allrounder confirmed he would be watching the auction, which takes place on the eve of the third Ashes Test.

“I’m sure I will be [watching], with a few other guys,” he said. “It’s a bit of a lottery where you might go, and who might be in your team, so it’s always fun to watch.”

Green also spoke of his close friendship with England’s Will Jacks, formed during their time at RCB, with the pair set to spend time together in Melbourne with their partners ahead of the fourth Test.

Asked about the possibility of a long-term central contract with Cricket Australia following recent changes to the memorandum of understanding, Green played down the speculation. “We try to stay pretty present, so I’m not trying to look too far ahead,” he said.

Several other members of Australia’s Test squad have registered for the IPL auction, including Steven Smith, Josh Inglis (with limited availability) and Beau Webster, while Jhye Richardson is also on the long list. Among other Australians who could attract bids are Jake Fraser-McGurk, Matt Short and Riley Meredith.

England will also be well represented, with Ashes squad members Gus Atkinson, Ben Duckett, Jamie Smith, Matthew Potts and Josh Tongue all registered, none of whom have previously played in the IPL. Jonny Bairstow, Jordan Cox and Liam Livingstone are also expected to draw interest from franchises.
