India bowl out South Africa for 117, regain series lead with seven-wicket win

India reclaimed the lead in the T20I series with a comprehensive seven-wicket victory over South Africa in seam-friendly conditions at Dharamsala, after bowling the visitors out for just 117 and then riding a blistering start from Abhishek Sharma to seal the chase despite a brief wobble.

South Africa were undone by disciplined new-ball bowling from Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, who was playing in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah. The pair reduced the visitors to 7 for 3 inside the first four overs, setting the tone for a dominant bowling display. Although Aiden Markram fought back with a valiant 61, South Africa were dismissed in 19.5 overs, falling well short of a competitive total.

Arshdeep struck early with a probing spell that exploited the movement on offer, trapping Reeza Hendricks lbw with a delivery that seamed back sharply. Rana then removed Quinton de Kock and Dewald Brevis in quick succession, leaving South Africa reeling. Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube added to the pressure with a wicket each in their opening overs as India tightened their grip.

Markram attempted to steady the innings alongside Tristan Stubbs, but Stubbs never looked comfortable and edged Pandya behind. Varun Chakravarthy then ensured South Africa had no chance of recovery, conceding just 11 runs in his four overs while picking up two wickets. His wrong’uns accounted for Donovan Ferreira and Marco Jansen, breaking the only phase where South Africa threatened to build momentum.

Markram carried the batting almost single-handedly, bringing up his half-century in the 18th over as he took South Africa past 100. However, his dismissal in the 19th over, edging Arshdeep, effectively ended any hope of pushing the total towards respectability. Kuldeep Yadav cleaned up the tail to finish with figures of 2 for 12, while Arshdeep returned 2 for 13.

Chasing 118, India were given a flying start by Abhishek Sharma, who launched an aggressive assault at the top of the order. He struck 35 off just 18 balls, pulling and charging the South African seamers to quickly take the game away from the visitors. His innings included multiple sixes and ensured India raced to 60 inside the powerplay.

The early burst allowed India to absorb a mini-collapse as wickets fell in the middle overs. Shubman Gill made 28 but took time to settle, while Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav failed to capitalise on their starts. However, the low target meant the pressure never truly returned, and India crossed the line comfortably with plenty of overs in hand.

While Abhishek’s dismissal slowed the chase, his impact had already tilted the contest decisively. With the ball dominating throughout the match and India’s bowlers producing a collective effort, the hosts sealed a convincing win to go ahead in the series and underline their strength in helpful conditions.
