Derbyshire Sign Mohammad Abbas on Two-Year Deal

Derbyshire have completed a major overseas signing ahead of the 2026 season, securing Pakistan Test seamer Mohammad Abbas on a two-year contract that will run through the 2026 and 2027 County Championship campaigns.

Abbas, one of the most respected red-ball bowlers in county cricket, arrives with an outstanding record built during spells with Leicestershire, Hampshire and Nottinghamshire. Most recently, he played a key role in Nottinghamshire’s County Championship title-winning season last summer, further underlining his value as a proven match-winner in English conditions.

The 35-year-old will be reunited at Derbyshire with head coach Mickey Arthur, the former Pakistan coach who handed Abbas his Test debut. Arthur believes the signing could be pivotal in Derbyshire’s push for promotion after narrowly missing out on a place in Division One in 2025.

“This is a statement signing for us,” Arthur said. “We’ve beaten a number of Division One counties to sign one of the finest red-ball bowlers around and we’re absolutely delighted to have Mohammad on board for 2026 and 2027. He’s an exceptional bowler who builds pressure, bowls maidens and takes wickets at a remarkable average. Just as important is the experience he brings, which will be invaluable for our young players.”

Since first arriving in county cricket with Leicestershire in 2018, Abbas has taken 291 County Championship wickets at an impressive average of 19.89. His most recent Test appearance for Pakistan came in January, and he remains highly regarded for his control, accuracy and ability to exploit English conditions.

Abbas said he was excited by the prospect of joining Derbyshire and working again with Arthur. “It’s exciting for me to join Derbyshire and work with Mickey Arthur again. He’s a fantastic coach, and after hearing his plans for the club, we share the same ambitions: to be in Division One,” Abbas said.

“The team only just missed out on promotion in 2025, so I’m hoping I can come in, perform well, help win a few more games and give our supporters a trophy to celebrate.”

Derbyshire will hope Abbas’s arrival provides the cutting edge required to turn promotion contenders into title challengers over the next two seasons.
