Richard Ngarava Named Zimbabwe’s New Test and ODI Captain

Left-arm fast bowler Richard Ngarava has been appointed as Zimbabwe’s new captain in Tests and One-Day Internationals, Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) announced on Thursday. The 27-year-old takes over from Craig Ervine, who has stepped down from the leadership role.

Allrounder Brian Bennett has been named Ngarava’s vice-captain, while experienced campaigner Sikandar Raza will continue to lead the national side in T20 Internationals.

The leadership changes were confirmed following Zimbabwe Cricket’s fourth-quarter board meeting held in Harare. ZC chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani praised Ngarava’s development and leadership qualities, expressing confidence in his ability to guide the team forward.

“Ngarava has shown remarkable growth as a player and leader over the years,” Mukuhlani said. “He commands respect within the dressing room and has consistently delivered for Zimbabwe across all formats. We believe he is ready to lead the team into its next chapter.”

Mukuhlani also paid tribute to Ervine’s contribution as captain during a demanding period for the side.

“Craig Ervine led with professionalism, resilience and dignity during a challenging period. Zimbabwe Cricket is deeply grateful for his contribution to the team’s stability and progress,” he said.

Ngarava made his international debut in 2017 and has since represented Zimbabwe in 11 Tests and 145 white-ball internationals. He is the country’s leading wicket-taker in T20 Internationals, with 108 wickets in 90 matches at an economy rate of 7.30. In addition to his international record, Ngarava has gained extensive franchise experience, featuring in tournaments such as the ILT20, Lanka Premier League and Bangladesh Premier League.

At just 22, Bennett has already made a strong impression, scoring centuries across all three formats for Zimbabwe and earning a reputation for his aggressive approach at the top of the order.

“Brian’s appointment as vice-captain reflects our confidence in his cricketing intelligence, maturity and long-term leadership potential,” Mukuhlani said. “He represents the future of Zimbabwean cricket.”

The new leadership group will look to build on recent progress as Zimbabwe prepare for upcoming international assignments.
