Gede Priandana Scripts History With Five Wickets in an Over in T20Is
Indonesia’s Gede Priandana created history on Tuesday by becoming the first bowler—man or woman—to take five wickets in a single over in an international T20 match where ball-by-ball data is available. The landmark feat came during the first T20I against Cambodia in Bali.
The 28-year-old right-arm fast bowler achieved the record in dramatic fashion while bowling his very first over of the match. Cambodia, chasing 168, were still in contention at 106 for 5 at the end of the 15th over. Priandana then turned the game on its head.
He struck with the first three deliveries, dismissing Shah Abrar Hussain, Nirmaljit Singh and Chanthoeun Rathanak to claim a hat-trick. A dot ball followed before he removed Mongdara Sok and Pel Vennak off the final two legal deliveries. Cambodia managed just one run in the over—a wide between the final two wickets—and were bowled out 60 runs short of the target.
Earlier in the match, Priandana had contributed modestly with the bat, scoring 6 off 11 balls while opening the innings alongside wicketkeeper-batter Dharma Kesuma. Kesuma starred with the bat, remaining unbeaten on 110 from 68 balls, an innings that included eight fours and six sixes, and laid the foundation for Indonesia’s total of 168.
While this is the first instance of five wickets in an over in an international T20, the feat has occurred twice before in men’s domestic T20 cricket. Bangladesh’s Al-Amin Hossain achieved it in the 2013–14 Victory Day T20 Cup while playing for UCB-BCB XI, and Karnataka’s Abhimanyu Mithun dismissed five Haryana batters in the semi-final of the 2019–20 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
In international T20s, there had previously been 14 instances of bowlers taking four wickets in an over. The most iconic among them was Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga, who famously took four wickets in four balls against New Zealand in 2019.
Priandana’s extraordinary over now stands alone in T20I history, marking a rare and remarkable moment in the game.
