Kohli Surpasses Tendulkar, Rohit Equals Warner in List A Milestones
Indian cricket greats Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma marked their returns to domestic one-day cricket with landmark achievements in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, underlining their enduring class and relevance in the 50-over format.
Kohli broke a long-standing record held by Sachin Tendulkar to become the fastest batter to reach 16,000 runs in men’s List A cricket. The milestone came in his 330th innings during Delhi’s Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Andhra in Bengaluru. Tendulkar had reached the same mark in 391 innings.
Kohli’s achievement further strengthens his dominance in the format, as he now holds the record for being the fastest to every 1,000-run milestone in List A cricket from 10,000 runs onwards. Among Indian batters, only Kohli and Tendulkar feature in the top five fastest to 16,000 runs overall. The others on the list are Gordon Greenidge (422 innings), Ricky Ponting (430 innings), and Graham Gooch and Viv Richards (435 innings).
While Kohli continues to add to his record-breaking legacy, Rohit Sharma produced a blistering century for Mumbai against Sikkim in Jaipur to equal David Warner’s record for the most 150-plus scores in men’s List A cricket, with nine such innings. Rohit finished with a commanding 155 off just 94 balls, having brought up his hundred in 62 deliveries. His innings included 18 fours and nine sixes and helped Mumbai secure an emphatic eight-wicket victory.
At 38 years and 238 days, Rohit also became the second-oldest player to score a century in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Only Bengal’s Anustup Majumdar, who scored two hundreds in the 2023–24 season after turning 39, is older on that list.
Both Kohli and Rohit are making rare appearances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Kohli last played the tournament in the 2009–10 season, while Rohit’s previous outing came in 2017–18. Kohli’s decision to return to domestic cricket followed weeks of speculation and came amid a rich run of form. He was named Player of the Series in India’s ODI series against South Africa last month, scoring two centuries and an unbeaten half-century.
Rohit, too, has enjoyed a resurgence in white-ball cricket, scoring a superb century in Australia followed by two half-centuries in three innings against South Africa, reaffirming his status as a key figure in India’s ODI plans.
With both batters having retired from Test and T20 international cricket, their focus remains firmly on the one-day format. Performances like these suggest that Kohli and Rohit will continue to be central to India’s ambitions as they build towards the 2027 ODI World Cup.
