David Stars Before Injury as Hurricanes Edge Scorchers in Boxing Day Thriller
Tim David produced a match-defining innings before suffering a hamstring injury as Hobart Hurricanes defeated Perth Scorchers by four wickets at Optus Stadium on Boxing Day.
Chasing 151 for victory, the Hurricanes recovered from a shaky start to reach 153 for 6 with three balls to spare, improving their record to three wins from four matches this season. However, the win was overshadowed by concerns over David’s fitness, with the Big Bash League final scheduled for January 25.
Earlier, Perth Scorchers were restricted to 150 for 8 after spinner Rishad Hossain claimed an impressive 3 for 33. Finn Allen top-scored for the Scorchers with a brisk 43 off 23 balls, while Nick Hobson (29) and Laurie Evans (27) provided support. Despite a solid platform, Perth lost momentum after Allen was caught on the boundary in the ninth over, slipping to 73 for 3 and failing to capitalise on their strong start.
Riley Meredith was Hobart’s most economical bowler, finishing with 2 for 19 and removing star opener Mitchell Marsh. Rishad proved the key strike weapon, dismissing Cooper Connolly, Aaron Hardie and Evans to halt the Scorchers’ innings.
In reply, Hobart were rocked early by Connolly’s opening spell. After conceding a six first ball, Connolly struck back immediately and went on to take 3 for 23 as the Hurricanes slumped to 39 for 3 inside eight overs. Joel Paris also chipped in, leaving Hobart in early trouble.
David then steadied the chase with a composed 42 off 28 balls, sharing a crucial partnership with Nikhil Chaudhary, who contributed 34 off 30 deliveries. The pair put the Hurricanes back in control before David was forced to retire hurt in the 15th over after injuring his hamstring while running a single, with the score at 103 for 4.
Mac Wright, replacing the injured Matthew Wade, and Chris Jordan ensured there was no late collapse. Wright remained unbeaten on 22 from 13 balls, striking a decisive six and four off consecutive deliveries from Aaron Hardie when 14 runs were required from eight balls. Jordan added a handy 15 as Hobart crossed the line comfortably.
The Scorchers, who entered the match eager to bounce back from a shock loss to Brisbane Heat after failing to defend 257, were left to rue missed chances in the field. Evans spilled two difficult opportunities off David, moments that ultimately proved costly.
While the Hurricanes celebrated another important win, all eyes will now be on David’s recovery, with his availability for the remainder of the tournament in doubt.
