Rabada Racing Time to Regain Fitness Ahead of T20 World Cup

South Africa fast bowler Kagiso Rabada is facing a race against time to prove his fitness ahead of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup as he continues his recovery from a rib injury.

Rabada missed the opening match of defending champions MI Cape Town’s SA20 campaign against Durban’s Super Giants on Boxing Day and is expected to sit out their second fixture as well. However, MI Cape Town captain Rashid Khan said the franchise remains hopeful the pace spearhead will be available for their third match on December 31.

If Rabada returns as planned, he will have limited time to demonstrate his readiness before South Africa announce their 15-player squad for the T20 World Cup on January 2. The selectors, led by convener Patrick Moroney alongside head coach Shukri Conrad, will closely monitor his workload and fitness. When fully fit, Rabada is almost certain to lead South Africa’s pace attack, but any lingering concerns could weigh heavily on selection decisions.

South Africa have previously been burned by fitness gambles at major tournaments, most notably at the 2019 ODI World Cup, when an injured Dale Steyn was selected but was forced out without playing a match. Rabada’s current issue, however, is believed to be far less serious than Steyn’s career-ending shoulder injury.

Encouraging signs have emerged in recent days, with Rabada seen bowling without visible discomfort during practice sessions at Newlands ahead of the SA20 opener. He also spent extended time working with MI Cape Town bowling coach Mitchell McClenaghan and indicated earlier in the week that he was feeling “fine” when deputising for Rashid at a captain’s press conference.

Rabada has not featured in competitive cricket since October, when he played a key role in South Africa’s Test victory over Pakistan in Rawalpindi. He was rested for the subsequent white-ball series and later named in the Test squad for India, only to be ruled out on the morning of the first match due to the rib injury. He missed the second Test as well and was subsequently excluded from the white-ball leg of the tour.

South Africa’s fast-bowling resources have also been tested elsewhere. Gerald Coetzee was absent from Durban Super Giants’ XI in the SA20 opener as he continues to recover from a pectoral tear, though he is understood to be close to a return. Joburg Super Kings are yet to provide an update on Nandre Burger, who sustained an injury during the recent ODI series against India.

There was some positive news, however, with 19-year-old left-arm quick Kwena Maphaka returning to action for DSG against MI Cape Town. The match marked his first appearance since October after a hamstring strain had ruled him out of South Africa’s recent white-ball tours.

With the T20 World Cup fast approaching, Rabada’s progress over the coming days could prove crucial to South Africa’s plans as they seek to assemble a fully fit and balanced pace attack.
