Jansen Sparks Capitals Collapse as Super Kings Break Centurion Jinx

A career-best bowling performance from Duan Jansen triggered a dramatic Pretoria Capitals collapse as Joburg Super Kings claimed a landmark 22-run victory at SuperSport Park, their first win at the venue in four seasons of the SA20.

Chasing 169, the Capitals appeared firmly in control after an assured opening stand of 71 between Bryce Parsons and Will Smeed. However, once the partnership was broken, the innings unraveled rapidly, with PC losing five wickets for just 18 runs and eventually finishing on 146 for 9.

Jansen was the chief architect of the turnaround, finishing with outstanding figures of 4 for 23. His tall frame and consistent back-of-a-length bowling proved difficult to handle, as Capitals batters struggled to find timing or boundaries once the pressure mounted.

Earlier, Joburg Super Kings had recovered well after a shaky start to post 168 for 6. They were reduced to 16 for 2 in the fourth over after Tymal Mills and Codi Yusuf exploited early bounce with disciplined short-pitched bowling. Matthew de Villiers edged behind attempting to drive on the up, while Faf du Plessis was undone by extra bounce, top-edging a hook to the wicketkeeper.

Rilee Rossouw and Wiaan Mulder then steadied the innings with a crucial partnership. Rossouw struck 48 from 33 balls, while Mulder contributed a fluent 43 off 28 deliveries, initially rebuilding before accelerating against the spinners. The pair added momentum through the middle overs, particularly between overs 11 and 13, before falling in quick succession.

Despite a brief slowdown, late hitting from Akeal Hosein pushed JSK beyond the 160 mark — a significant milestone at Centurion, where teams had historically struggled to defend lower totals. Mills (2 for 17) and Yusuf (2 for 29) were the standout bowlers for the Capitals, maintaining control throughout the innings.

Pretoria’s chase began confidently, with Smeed (34 off 30) and Parsons (41 off 30) capitalising on improved batting conditions. But Hosein provided the breakthrough by sliding one through Smeed, opening the door for Jansen to take control. From 71 without loss, the Capitals slumped to 89 for 5 in the space of four overs.

With the required run rate soaring, panic set in. Jansen received strong support from Mulder, Richard Gleeson and Janco Smit, all of whom hit the deck hard and squeezed the scoring options. By the time Jansen claimed his fourth wicket, PC were reeling at 114 for 7, and the result was effectively sealed well before the final over.

The win not only lifted Joburg Super Kings’ campaign but also marked a historic breakthrough at SuperSport Park, achieved through discipline with the ball and a match-defining spell from Duan Jansen.
