Nortje, Milne Hand Paarl Royals Record-Low Defeat as Sunrisers Eastern Cape Dominate

Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC) began their SA20 2025–26 campaign in emphatic fashion, crushing Paarl Royals by a massive margin to extend a striking early trend in the tournament. After the opening round of group-stage matches, all three games have been won by away teams — and in each case, by the side batting first.

Playing at Boland Park, a venue where Paarl Royals were unbeaten last season, SEC exposed the hosts’ lack of bowling depth to secure a bonus-point victory and move to the top of the table. The defeat consigned the Royals to the lowest total in SA20 history.

Strong start sets up commanding total

SEC laid the foundation with a fluent opening stand of 66 between Jonny Bairstow and Quinton de Kock. The pair raced to 51 inside the first five overs before Bairstow was dismissed, chipping Ottneil Baartman to a stunning diving catch by David Miller at mid-off.

In a tactical experiment, SEC promoted Marco Jansen to No.3 despite having specialist batters Matthew Breetzke and Tristan Stubbs in the XI. The move backfired. Jansen struggled for timing and was eventually bowled by Bjorn Fortuin’s well-disguised slower delivery, marking the first time Jansen had batted at No.3 in T20 cricket. SEC slipped from 66 without loss to 89 for 3 in just 21 balls.

However, a powerful late surge ensured the innings regained momentum. Breetzke and Jordan Hermann added 73 for the fifth wicket, targeting Baartman in the death overs. Hermann, in particular, impressed with clean hitting, bringing up a 26-ball half-century as SEC plundered 57 runs in the final four overs to post 186 for 4 — the third-highest SA20 total at Boland Park.

Paarl’s bowling effort raised questions, especially the decision to give Jersey international Asa Tribe just one over, which cost only a single run, while every other bowler conceded at least eight runs per over.

Royals collapse to historic low

In reply, Paarl Royals’ innings unravelled almost immediately. They were reduced to 7 for 2 after two overs and never recovered.

Marco Jansen struck with his third ball of the tournament, dismissing last season’s leading run-scorer Lhuan-dre Pretorius for a duck. The wicket extended Jansen’s record as the most successful bowler in SA20 history, taking his tally to 48 wickets in 36 matches.

Anrich Nortje then delivered a devastating spell of fast bowling that effectively ended the contest. Introduced at the end of the Powerplay, Nortje removed Asa Tribe with a sharp bouncer and returned later to rip through the middle and lower order. He bowled Delano Potgieter with a full, seaming delivery before dismissing Bjorn Fortuin and Mujeeb Ur Rahman with steep bounce, all caught behind by de Kock.

Nortje finished with figures of 4 for 13, leaving Paarl reeling at 48 for 8. The innings ended on 49 — the lowest score in SA20 history — with 49 balls still unused, marking the second-biggest defeat in the tournament’s history.

Statement win for SEC

The comprehensive victory not only underlined SEC’s title credentials but also sent a strong message about their bowling depth and finishing power. For Paarl Royals, it was a sobering start to the season, raising immediate concerns about their bowling balance and batting resilience as the tournament moves forward.
