Webster, Inglis Released for BBL Duty Ahead of Sydney Test
Australia have released Beau Webster and Josh Inglis from the Test squad to allow them to play one Big Bash League match each before the fifth and final Ashes Test at the SCG, following the early finish to the Melbourne Test.
Webster will turn out for the Hobart Hurricanes against the Melbourne Renegades in Hobart on Monday, while Inglis is set to represent the Perth Scorchers against the Sydney Thunder in Sydney on Tuesday. Both players will rejoin the national squad later in the week in preparation for the Sydney Test, which begins on January 4.
Webster is yet to feature in the Ashes series but could come into selection contention for the final Test, with Cameron Green struggling for runs. Inglis, meanwhile, was omitted for the MCG Test after playing in the opening two matches in Brisbane and Adelaide, where he made starts but failed to post a significant score.
The wicketkeeper-batter lost his place when selectors opted to retain Usman Khawaja in the middle order following his late recall in Adelaide. Khawaja replaced an ill Steven Smith and responded with scores of 82 and 40, cementing his spot in the XI.
No other players have been released from the Test squad for BBL duty between the fourth and fifth Tests, though several are expected to return to their franchises once the Ashes conclude.
Steven Smith is scheduled to appear for the Sydney Sixers, while Mitchell Starc could make his first BBL appearance in 11 years, subject to medical clearance after potentially playing all five Tests. Having retired from T20 internationals and ruled himself out of the upcoming T20 World Cup, Starc is likely to take a break after the BBL before heading to the IPL.
Josh Hazlewood may also use the tournament to demonstrate his fitness ahead of the World Cup after missing the entire Ashes due to hamstring and Achilles injuries.
Pat Cummins, named on Sydney Thunder’s marquee supplementary list, is technically available but is unlikely to feature. The captain was not considered for the final two Tests after his return in Adelaide helped Australia retain the Ashes.
Several other Test players are expected to bolster BBL line-ups after the Sydney Test. Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne should be available for the Brisbane Heat, with Michael Neser also a possibility if he comes through the Tests unscathed. Travis Head and Alex Carey could return for the Adelaide Strikers, Cameron Green for the Perth Scorchers, and Jhye Richardson — who played earlier in the tournament before his Test recall — is likely to rejoin the Scorchers after the final Test.
Jake Weatherald (Hobart Hurricanes), Scott Boland (Melbourne Stars) and Brendan Doggett (Melbourne Renegades) may also make appearances later in the competition.
Melbourne Renegades had hoped to see Nathan Lyon feature for the first time since his move from the Sydney Sixers, but a hamstring injury sustained in Adelaide has ruled him out. His replacement, Todd Murphy, is expected to return to the Sixers after the Sydney Test and could make his first home appearance, having not been selected at the MCG.
This season’s schedule has created a rare window for Test players to feature in the latter stages of the BBL. However, such flexibility is unlikely next year, with Australia set to tour India for a five-Test series beginning in January immediately after the home series against New Zealand.
There may also be selection pressure later this season, with Australia’s T20 squad due to tour Pakistan for three matches as World Cup preparation. The BBL finals begin on January 20, with the final scheduled for January 25, potentially clashing with international commitments.
