Laura Harris Equals Fastest Women’s T20 Fifty in Explosive Otago Debut

Australian power-hitter Laura Harris made a stunning start to her Women’s Super Smash campaign, smashing a 15-ball half-century on debut for Otago to equal the fastest fifty on record in women’s T20 cricket.

Harris reached the milestone on Sunday against Canterbury at Molyneux Park in Alexandra, matching the mark set by Marie Kelly for Warwickshire against Gloucestershire in 2022, the joint-fastest half-century in women’s T20s where data is available.

Walking in at 46 for 2 in the sixth over while chasing 146, Harris wasted no time asserting her authority. She tore into the Canterbury attack, racing to 52 off just 17 balls, striking six fours and four sixes, and effectively sealing the chase inside nine overs. Otago passed the target in the 15th over, with Harris eventually caught in the deep off medium-pacer Gabby Sullivan.

The innings was a sharp contrast to Harris’ recent Women’s Big Bash League campaign with Sydney Thunder, which proved disappointing for both player and team. Thunder finished second-last on the eight-team table, ahead only of winless Brisbane Heat. Harris featured in all 10 matches, batting eight times for a total of 69 runs, although her strike rate of 197.14 was the highest in the competition.

Despite that lean run, Harris has consistently demonstrated her explosive capabilities throughout the year. Earlier in 2024, she came close to breaking Kelly’s record while playing for Warwickshire, blasting a 17-ball half-century on her way to a Player-of-the-Match performance of 55 off 21 balls against Durham in the Vitality Blast.

Harris’ latest effort further underlined her unique hitting prowess. All six of her T20 scores above 50 have come in fewer than 20 balls — including three 18-ball fifties and one off 19 balls — a feat no other batter in women’s cricket has achieved more than once.

Her rapid scoring also earned Otago a slice of history. They became the first team to claim a bonus point under the Women’s Super Smash’s new points system, introduced this season to encourage higher-scoring matches. Teams earn a bonus point for scoring 150 or more runs in an innings, or — when chasing — for maintaining a run rate at least 1.25 times higher than the opposition.

Canterbury scored at 7.25 runs per over, while Otago raced along at 9.84, comfortably securing both victory and the bonus point thanks largely to Harris’ blistering knock.
