Moeen Ali Reverses Domestic Retirement, Joins Yorkshire for T20 Blast

Former England allrounder Moeen Ali has reversed his retirement from English domestic cricket and will return to the Vitality T20 Blast this season after signing with Yorkshire. The 38-year-old is also set to register for the Hundred auction, having missed the competition last year.

Moeen had stepped away from domestic cricket last season to navigate the ECB’s revised No-Objection Certificate (NOC) regulations, which limited players’ ability to compete in overseas leagues. Despite that decision, he featured in eight Blast group matches for Warwickshire before leaving mid-season to play for Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Global Super League and the Caribbean Premier League.

Now eligible once again, Moeen will make Yorkshire his third county after previous spells with Worcestershire and Warwickshire. The move could see him reunite with long-time England team-mates Adil Rashid and Jonny Bairstow at Headingley. Rashid remains a Yorkshire player despite not featuring in the Blast since 2022, while Bairstow is also part of the club’s setup.

Since retiring from international cricket in September 2024, Moeen has remained active on the global franchise circuit. Over the winter, he has played in the Canada Super60, Abu Dhabi T10, ILT20 and the Bangladesh Premier League, and is scheduled to appear in the Pakistan Super League before the Blast begins in May.

“I’m delighted to be joining Yorkshire for the Blast,” Moeen said. “It’s a huge club with a proud history, and what really appeals to me is where the team is heading. There’s a lot of talent in the squad and the chance to work with Anthony McGrath and help push the group forward is exciting.”

He added: “I’ve always loved playing at Headingley. The wicket, the atmosphere and the supporters make it a special place. This feels like a fresh challenge and I’m arriving hungry for it.”

Yorkshire have never won the T20 Blast and finished eighth in the nine-team North Group last season. The club has undergone significant changes during the off-season, losing Dawid Malan to Gloucestershire and Jordan Thompson to Warwickshire, while recruiting Australians Sam Whiteman and Andrew Tye as local players, along with overseas signings Naveen-ul-Haq and Logan van Beek.

Yorkshire’s general manager of cricket, Gavin Hamilton, hailed Moeen’s arrival as a major boost for the club.

“Moeen is a world-class allrounder whose influence extends well beyond his on-field ability,” Hamilton said. “His experience and leadership will be invaluable as we continue to strengthen our T20 side and build a team capable of challenging consistently in the Blast.”

“He will bring real presence to the dressing room, and his decision to join Yorkshire reflects the direction of travel at the club.”
