Zampa, Inglis Headline BBL Free Agency as Player Movement Window Opens

Adam Zampa and Josh Inglis are set to be the biggest names on the Big Bash League (BBL) free-agent market as the player movement window opened on Wednesday, with Brisbane Heat keen to retain key players Matthew Kuhnemann and Michael Neser despite strong interest from rival clubs.

The BBL player movement window will remain open until February 5, giving franchises the opportunity to sign off-contract players or complete trades ahead of the next season. Melbourne Renegades and Sydney Thunder are expected to be the most aggressive suitors after underwhelming campaigns.

Brisbane Heat are confident of retaining left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann, who is pursuing a longer-term deal with the club and is understood to be resisting interest from Hobart Hurricanes. Kuhnemann enjoyed a solid season, taking nine wickets from nine matches at an economy rate of 7.68 while operating on batter-friendly Gabba pitches.

Kuhnemann’s contract situation is complicated by his likely involvement in Australia’s tour of India next January, which will clash with the BBL. The same scheduling issue applies to Josh Inglis, whose availability remains uncertain due to Australia’s packed international calendar, including a home Test series against New Zealand and an away tour of India. That overlap has delayed Inglis’s re-signing with Perth Scorchers despite his crucial role in their latest title-winning campaign.

Following Glenn Maxwell’s decision to sign a two-year extension with Melbourne Stars, attention has shifted firmly to Inglis and Zampa as the marquee free agents. Inglis, fresh off hitting the winning six to seal Scorchers’ sixth BBL title, is expected to attract strong offers from Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Renegades. Scorchers batter Nick Hobson, who impressed in a finisher’s role, is also being monitored by those two clubs after they finished at the bottom of the table.

While Inglis remains a chance to stay with Scorchers, Zampa appears set to depart Melbourne Renegades. The legspinner is seeking a move closer to his home in Byron Bay and is likely to join either Sydney Sixers or Sydney Thunder. Zampa could potentially replace offspinner Todd Murphy, who is out of contract at the Sixers and may return to Victoria, with both Renegades and Stars keen on securing his services.

Brisbane Heat allrounder Michael Neser, who attracted interest after his starring role in the Ashes limited his BBL availability this season, is also expected to re-sign with the club, according to sources.

Meanwhile, emerging Heat fast bowler Tom Balkin has caught the attention of multiple franchises following an impressive debut BBL season, highlighted by a match-winning final over against Adelaide Strikers in his first appearance.
