Shehan Jayasuriya Named in USA Squad for 2026 T20 World Cup; Aaron Jones Misses Out

Former Sri Lanka allrounder Shehan Jayasuriya is set to make his debut for the United States after being named in the USA’s 15-man squad for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held in India and Sri Lanka from February 7.

The 34-year-old Jayasuriya, a left-handed batter and offspin bowler, represented Sri Lanka in 12 ODIs and 18 T20Is between 2015 and 2020. He is one of two players in the squad yet to earn a cap for the USA, alongside Mohammad Mohsin, a 29-year-old Peshawar-born legspin-bowling allrounder who is still awaiting his international debut.

Also included is Pune-born batter Shubham Ranjane, who has played four ODIs for the USA but remains uncapped in T20 Internationals. Ranjane is the grandson of former India medium-pacer Vasant Ranjane, who featured in seven Test matches for India between 1958 and 1964.

The squad features 10 players from the USA team that reached the Super Eight stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup. Among them are Andries Gous and Saurabh Netravalkar, the team’s leading run-scorer and wicket-taker respectively in that tournament, as well as captain Monank Patel.

Notably absent is star batter Aaron Jones, who has been suspended from all forms of cricket after being charged under the ICC and Cricket West Indies anti-corruption codes.

With USA Cricket currently suspended by the ICC, the squad was selected by a panel led by head coach Pubudu Dassanayake. The selection process was overseen by a compliance officer appointed by the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC).

The USA have been placed in Group A alongside defending champions India, Pakistan, Netherlands, and Namibia. They will begin their campaign against co-hosts India in Mumbai on February 7, before taking on Pakistan in Colombo on February 10—a rematch of their famous upset win at the 2024 T20 World Cup. The USA will then face Netherlands on February 13 and Namibia on February 15, with both matches scheduled to be played in Chennai.
