England Opt to Bowl as They Chase Series Win Against Sri Lanka in Second T20I

England captain Harry Brook won the toss for the second straight match and elected to bowl in the second T20I against Sri Lanka in Pallekele, as the visitors looked to secure a series-clinching victory.

England’s comfortable win in the opening T20I gave them a 1–0 lead, but the build-up to the second match was dominated by off-field issues surrounding Brook. The England skipper has come under intense scrutiny following fresh revelations about his infamous night out in Wellington late last year. Brook apologised for misleading statements after it emerged that he was not alone when he was involved in an altercation with a nightclub bouncer on the eve of an ODI against New Zealand.

Jacob Bethell and Josh Tongue were also present on the night, and all three players are now under investigation by the Cricket Regulator. The developments have led to calls in some quarters for Brook to be removed as captain, while questions have also been raised about managing director Rob Key and head coach Brendon McCullum over an alleged attempt to cover up the incident.

Despite the controversy, Brook’s immediate focus remains on England’s preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup, with their opening match against Nepal in Mumbai just a week away. England named an unchanged XI from the first T20I, with Ben Duckett still sidelined by a finger injury sustained while taking a catch during the third ODI of the tour.

Duckett’s absence means Jos Buttler makes his 402nd appearance for England across formats, surpassing James Anderson’s long-standing record. Buttler has played 57 Tests, 199 ODIs and is featuring in his 146th T20I.

Sri Lanka made two changes to their side, bringing in Pavan Rathnayake and Dunith Wellalage in place of Dhananjaya de Silva and Maheesh Theekshana. Dhananjaya’s omission has fuelled speculation over his place in Sri Lanka’s final World Cup squad. Captain Dasun Shanaka said he was content to bat first on a used surface and urged his batters to make better use of the crease against England’s spinners.

Sri Lanka XI: Pathum Nissanka, Kamil Mishara, Kusal Mendis, Pavan Rathnayake, Charith Asalanka, Janith Liyanage, Dasun Shanaka (captain), Dunith Wellalage, Wanindu Hasaranga, Matheesha Pathirana, Eshan Malinga.

England XI: Phil Salt, Jos Buttler (wicketkeeper), Jacob Bethell, Tom Banton, Harry Brook (captain), Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Liam Dawson, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid.

With momentum and selection stability on their side, England will be aiming to seal the series, while Sri Lanka face a must-win contest to keep the series alive.
