Spotless England Meet Unbeaten Australia in U-19 World Cup Semi-Final
An unbeaten Australia Under-19 side will take on a flawless England outfit in the first semi-final of the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2026, with both teams carrying perfect records into a contest that guarantees heartbreak for one of the tournament’s most consistent performers.
Australia, captained by Oliver Peake, have enjoyed a dominant title-defence campaign. They topped their group in the opening round with three wins before beating South Africa and West Indies to finish first in their Super Sixes group. England have matched that consistency, winning all five of their matches so far, though an inferior net run rate saw them finish second to India in the Super Sixes standings.
While both sides arrive in formidable form, England may hold a slight advantage in familiarity with conditions. Their last two victories came at Bulawayo, the venue for the semi-final, whereas Australia will be playing their first match of the tournament at the ground. The winner of the contest will advance to the final to face either India or Afghanistan.
England’s batting has been spearheaded by Hampshire’s Ben Mayes, who has been prolific at No. 3. Mayes’ 191 against Scotland remains the tournament’s second-highest individual score, and he has followed it up with an unbeaten 77 against Zimbabwe and 53 against New Zealand, placing him comfortably at the top of the run-scoring charts.
Australia’s top order has been equally impressive, led by opener Nitesh Samuel, who has been dismissed just twice in five innings. Samuel began the tournament with unbeaten knocks of 77 and 60 against Ireland and Japan respectively, before rounding off the Super Sixes with a fluent 56 against West Indies. Captain Peake also rediscovered form at a crucial moment, scoring a century against West Indies.
Both teams boast strong bowling attacks. Australia’s new-ball pair of Charles Lachmund and Will Byrom have consistently made early inroads. Byrom claimed a five-wicket haul to dismantle Sri Lanka for 58, while Lachmund led the charge in bowling out South Africa for 118. England’s Manny Lumsden has been equally impressive, averaging just 9.30 with the ball and sitting joint-top of the tournament’s wicket-takers with 13 scalps, one more than Lachmund.
History adds further intrigue to the contest. A victory would move Australia a step closer to defending their Under-19 World Cup title — a feat achieved only once before, by Pakistan in 2004 and 2006. England, meanwhile, are chasing a place in their third Under-19 World Cup final, while Australia are aiming for a record seventh appearance.
The toss is unlikely to play a decisive role, with results evenly split between teams batting first and second at Bulawayo during this World Cup. The last meeting between the two sides came during the Super Sixes of the 2024 edition, when Australia cruised to a 110-run win via the DLS method.
With two unbeaten teams colliding, the semi-final promises a high-quality contest and a fitting precursor to the tournament finale.
