Rogers, Handscomb Guide Victoria to Seven-Wicket One-Day Cup Win Over Queensland

Tom Rogers starred with a stunning one-handed catch and a composed half-century as Victoria defeated Queensland by seven wickets in their One-Day Cup clash at the MCG.

Victoria chased down a modest target of 216 with ease, reaching 216 for 3 with 33 balls to spare. Peter Handscomb anchored the innings with an unbeaten 90, while Rogers contributed a fluent 69 at the top of the order.

The turning point of the match came early in Queensland’s innings when Rogers produced a spectacular one-handed catch at cover to dismiss Marnus Labuschagne for four. Labuschagne had driven fiercely through the off side, but Rogers reacted instantly, leaping to his left to pluck the ball out of the air in what proved to be one of the catches of the season.

Queensland were rocked by the dismissal and slumped to 17 for 3, a position from which they never fully recovered. Wicketkeeper Jimmy Peirson offered resistance with a gritty 65 off 92 deliveries, but lacked support as Queensland were bowled out for 215 in 49 overs.

Victoria’s bowlers laid the foundation for the victory. Openers Cameron McClure and Austin Anlezark struck early with two wickets apiece, before spinner Todd Murphy delivered a decisive spell of 3 for 29 from 10 overs, including a maiden, to keep the Bulls in check.

In reply, Rogers and Handscomb added 123 for the third wicket, the highest partnership of the match, ensuring Victoria remained in control throughout the chase. Handscomb, named player of the match, batted with composure and authority to guide his side home.

The win was just Victoria’s second of the season. While they remain unable to qualify for the final — with Tasmania already securing their place — the result has dealt a blow to Queensland’s title hopes, with the Bulls having only one match remaining in the league stage.
