Rew Century Outshines Peake as England Reach Under-19 World Cup Final
England booked their place in the final of the ICC Under-19 World Cup after defeating Australia by 27 runs in a thrilling first semi-final, with captain Thomas Rew’s century proving decisive despite a valiant hundred from Australian skipper Oliver Peake.
Opting to bat first, England were steadied by Rew after early wickets left them 57 for 2 shortly after the powerplay. The right-hander produced a composed and authoritative innings, striking 14 fours and a six to anchor the batting effort. He shared a crucial 135-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Calob Falconer, who contributed 40 from 53 balls.
By the time Falconer was dismissed by Naden Cooray at the end of the 36th over, England had recovered to 195 for 4. Rew continued to bat fluently and remained in control until the 43rd over, when he was run out by a direct hit from Steven Hogan at backward point. England went on to post a competitive total of 277 for 8.
In reply, Australia’s chase of 278 began cautiously, with Nitesh Samuel providing a steady presence at the top of the order. Samuel scored 47 from 83 balls and added 62 runs for the third wicket alongside Peake before being beaten in flight and stumped off Ralphie Albert in the 25th over.
Peake carried Australia’s hopes with a determined innings but found little sustained support as wickets continued to fall at the other end. Australia slipped from 134 for 5 in the 32nd over to 207 for 8 by the 43rd, appearing to be out of contention.
However, Peake reignited the chase in dramatic fashion during the 46th over, launching a counterattack against Manny Lumsden that yielded 22 runs, including one six and four boundaries, in partnership with Charles Lachmund.
Any chance of a late turnaround ended in the following over when Lachmund was dismissed off the first ball by Sebastian Morgan, leaving Australia still 32 runs adrift. Peake was the last man out in the 47th over, driving a full delivery straight to point, bringing the chase to an end.
England’s players immediately applauded Peake’s effort, shaking his hand before celebrating their progression to the final. Ultimately, Rew’s commanding century proved the difference as England sealed a memorable victory and advanced to the Under-19 World Cup final.
