Brasher’s Unbeaten Fifty Keeps Victoria in the Hunt Against Queensland

A defiant unbeaten half-century from debutant Dylan Brasher has kept Victoria’s hopes alive in a tense run chase against Queensland on the third day of their Sheffield Shield clash at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Chasing a challenging fourth-innings target of 242, Victoria reached stumps at 150 for 6, still requiring 92 runs for victory. Left-hander Brasher finished the day on 54 not out, showing impressive composure on debut after Queensland quick Tom Straker ripped through the Victorian top order with a devastating early spell.

Victoria’s chase began in explosive fashion with Sam Harper promoted to open the batting, as he had been in the teams’ previous meeting at the Gabba. Harper attacked Michael Neser from the outset, striking 14 runs from the opening over and racing to 19 off just 11 balls. However, his innings ended in controversy when he was adjudged lbw for the second time in the match, a decision that left him visibly stunned after the ball appeared to strike him high near the groin.

Straker capitalised on the breakthrough and soon tore through the middle order. Blake Macdonald was caught behind for a five-ball duck after indecision outside off stump, while Campbell Kellaway was squared up and caught in the gully after sustained pressure from around the wicket. With Straker claiming 3 for 16, Victoria slumped to 32 for 3.

Brasher and Peter Handscomb steadied the innings with a composed 47-run partnership. Brasher looked assured from the outset, defending confidently and driving fluently whenever the bowlers overpitched. Handscomb, less secure than during his first-innings 67, survived a top edge and several plays and misses but rotated the strike effectively.

Queensland regained momentum when Jem Ryan jagged one back through Handscomb’s defence, and Mitchell Swepson then produced a sharp legbreak from the footmarks to bowl Harry Dixon for five, leaving Victoria in trouble at 88 for 5.

Brasher found another capable partner in Mitchell Perry, and the pair added 57 runs to revive Victoria’s chase. Perry was dropped by Usman Khawaja at first slip on 24 — a regulation chance that would have left Victoria still needing over 100. Perry went on to make 27 before Ryan struck again, with the allrounder spooning a catch to cover.

Earlier in the day, Queensland had set a competitive target thanks largely to Hayden Kerr’s vital 36. Resuming on 173 for 6, Queensland appeared vulnerable when Neser was trapped lbw by Sam Elliott, raising hopes that Victoria could keep the target below 200. However, Kerr and Straker added a crucial 38-run stand to push the lead beyond that mark.

Victoria struck with the second new ball when Perry found sharp seam movement to bowl Straker, while Kerr’s resistance ended after an 89-ball innings when he edged a fine delivery from Fergus O’Neill. Mitchell Swepson attempted late acceleration, striking two boundaries before holing out to long-off to give O’Neill his third wicket.

With the ball softening late on day three, Brasher and Perry steadied the innings, though Perry fell before stumps. Victoria will have around 10 overs on the fourth morning to score freely before Queensland take the second new ball in what promises to be a gripping finish.
