Rahul, Smaran Star as Karnataka Knock Mumbai Out to Reach Ranji Semi-Final
KL Rahul produced a magnificent century to headline Karnataka’s memorable run chase against Mumbai, as the visitors overhauled a daunting target of 325 to seal a place in the Ranji Trophy semi-final at the Sharad Pawar Academy, Bandra-Kurla Complex. Karnataka’s victory knocked out 41-time champions Mumbai and set up a semi-final clash against first-time qualifiers Uttarakhand, beginning February 15.
Rahul top-scored with a commanding 130, anchoring the chase with authority before falling shortly after the lunch interval. His dismissal came in unusual fashion, as he gloved a spongy bouncer from Tushar Deshpande to a diving Yashasvi Jaiswal at gully while attempting a pull shot.
Mumbai sensed an opening when Deshpande struck again in his next over, strangling Shreyas Gopal down the leg side to leave Karnataka wobbling at 268 for 5. The tension escalated further when rookie wicketkeeper Kruthik Krishna, playing only his second match, was stumped off Tanush Kotian. Karnataka were suddenly 285 for 6, still 40 runs short, and the contest swung sharply in Mumbai’s favour.
The pressure was heightened by a brief on-field exchange between Vidyadhar Patil and Deshpande, prompting intervention from Mumbai captain Shardul Thakur and the umpires. Patil responded in emphatic fashion, opting to counter-attack rather than retreat. He finished unbeaten on 31 and fittingly struck the winning runs, sweeping Kotian to the deep square-leg boundary to spark wild celebrations in the Karnataka camp.
R Smaran, in only his second full domestic season, played a crucial supporting role with an unbeaten 83. He had earlier guided Karnataka through difficult phases, particularly after Karun Nair fell to a sharp nip-backer from Thakur. Smaran showcased composure and technique, driving fluently, playing late, and using his height effectively against spin. His innings included 11 boundaries and proved vital in steadying the chase.
“He’s a phenomenal player,” Rahul said of Smaran after being named Player of the Match. “This year, he has improved his game a lot more, scored bigger runs and scored when it matters. The fact that he’s got two double hundreds shows his hunger and skill. These are the kind of knocks that push a player to the next level and grab the eyeballs of the selectors.”
Rahul also underlined the belief within the Karnataka camp despite the scale of the chase. “We always knew we could chase it down,” he said. “The wicket had some help, so it was important to score and put pressure on them. Whoever came in, the message was to keep the scoreboard moving. A few quick wickets towards the end got our heart rates up, but Vidyadhar and Smaran finished it off superbly.”
The result capped a dramatic turnaround in the match. Karnataka had seized early control by bowling Mumbai out for 120 on the opening day and appeared well placed after cancelling out the first-innings deficit with eight wickets in hand. However, a collapse of 7 for 53 allowed Mumbai to limit Karnataka’s lead to just 52, with seamers Mohit Awasthi and Deshpande claiming four wickets each.
Mumbai showed greater resolve in the second innings, with eight batters crossing 25. Only Akash Anand went on to score a half-century, as Mumbai posted 377 to set Karnataka a stiff target. Ultimately, though, Rahul’s class and Smaran’s composure ensured Karnataka held their nerve to pull off one of their finest Ranji Trophy chases and book a place in the last four.
