Canada Opt to Bowl as South Africa Go Pace-Heavy in World Cup Opener

Canada captain Dilpreet Bajwa won the toss and elected to field against South Africa in their World Cup opener at Ahmedabad, asking the Proteas to bat first on a typically flat black-soil surface.

South Africa have named a pace-dominated XI, leaving out Anrich Nortje despite selecting four specialist quicks. Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen and Corbin Bosch form a formidable fast-bowling unit, with Keshav Maharaj included as the lone spin option. The conditions in Ahmedabad are expected to favour pace, particularly early on, before dew potentially comes into play later in the evening.

Tristan Stubbs begins the tournament batting at No. 6, a position he did not occupy in South Africa’s previous T20I, where Jason Smith featured in that role and Stubbs batted at No. 7. Smith, although part of the World Cup squad, has been left out of the playing XI for this match.

With the ball likely to skid on under lights, South Africa’s strategy appears geared towards maximising their strength in pace, while their batters will look to set a strong total in a match they begin as overwhelming favourites.

For Canada, this is their second appearance at a men’s World Cup. Bajwa will captain the side at a global tournament for the first time and will also open the batting alongside Yuvraj Samra. Canada’s hopes of springing a major upset rest heavily on their top order making the most of a batting-friendly surface.

Canada come into the match on the back of two warm-up losses, against Italy and Nepal. However, with dew expected to aid batting in the second innings, South Africa may look to post extra runs as insurance before Canada begin their chase at night.
