Patterson’s Twin Centuries Power NSW to Comfortable Win Over South Australia
Kurtis Patterson continued his stunning run of form, scoring his second century in as many innings to guide New South Wales to a commanding seven-wicket victory over South Australia in the One-Day Cup at Cricket Central, Sydney, on Tuesday.
Fresh off a career-best unbeaten 173 in first-class cricket last weekend, Patterson followed it up with an unbeaten 104 off 110 deliveries as NSW chased down South Australia’s 242 for 7 with six overs to spare.
The hosts suffered an early setback when opener Sam Konstas fell for 17, but Patterson steadied the innings with a crucial 113-run partnership for the third wicket alongside Matthew Gilkes. The stand laid the foundation for a comfortable chase before Gilkes departed for 46, caught just short of his half-century.
Moments later, Patterson brought up his second List A hundred of the summer by flicking Lloyd Pope to fine leg and running three. Stand-in captain for the match, Patterson remained unbeaten, though he was denied the chance to surpass his List A career-best score of 115, with Lachie Shaw sealing the victory with an unbeaten 33, including the winning boundary in the 44th over.
NSW finished on 246 for 3 and climbed to second place on the One-Day Cup ladder, behind leaders Tasmania.
Patterson’s innings was not without fortune, as he was dropped twice on 33 and 59. Nathan McSweeney spilled a difficult chance off his own part-time offspin, while Jordan Buckingham managed to get a hand to a leaping attempt at midwicket, only for the ball to evade him.
The 32-year-old showed his full range as he moved into the 80s with a towering six over deep square leg off Liam Scott, and earlier reached his half-century in 60 balls with a crisp drive down the ground.
Patterson’s rich vein of form comes after a challenging period that saw him dropped from NSW’s Sheffield Shield side during the 2023–24 season. Recently, he has spoken of his hope to add to his two Test caps when Australia enter a busy international schedule from August.
Earlier in the day, South Australia made a steady start after losing the toss, with Alex Carey and Jason Sangha both registering half-centuries. Carey scored 52 off 62 balls, while Sangha contributed 57 from 67 deliveries, but neither was able to push the total beyond reach.
Carey chipped a full delivery from Liam Hatcher to mid-on, while Sangha fell attempting to accelerate, holing out to Hatcher at deep third. Charlie Stobo was the pick of the South Australian bowlers, returning impressive figures of 3 for 36, though the visitors were ultimately restricted to 242 for 7.
