Hasaranga Ruled Out of T20 World Cup With Hamstring Injury
Sri Lanka have suffered a major setback in their T20 World Cup campaign with star allrounder Wanindu Hasaranga ruled out of the remainder of the tournament due to a hamstring injury.
Hasaranga sustained the injury during Sri Lanka’s opening group match against Ireland in Colombo on Sunday. Despite the setback, he completed his bowling spell, returning impressive figures of 3 for 25 from four overs to play a key role in derailing Ireland’s chase of 164.
However, further assessment revealed the injury to be serious. An MRI scan conducted on Monday confirmed a significant tear in his left hamstring. The results were subsequently reviewed by a specialist in the United Kingdom, following which Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed that Hasaranga would be unavailable for the rest of the competition.
The leg-spinning allrounder is expected to be replaced in the squad by Dushan Hemantha, another legspin-bowling allrounder, pending official confirmation.
Sri Lanka are next scheduled to face Oman on February 12 in Pallekele, before taking on Australia at the same venue on February 16. Their final group match is against Zimbabwe at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on February 19.
Hasaranga’s absence will be a significant blow for Sri Lanka, given his experience and match-winning ability with both bat and ball, as they look to progress deep into the tournament.
