South Africa Edge Afghanistan in Thrilling Double Super Over Clash

South Africa survived a dramatic encounter against Afghanistan in the T20 World Cup’s “group of death,” sealing victory after a pulsating contest that required two Super Overs to determine a winner.

The Proteas appeared to have the match under control heading into the final over of regulation time, with Afghanistan needing 13 runs and having just one wicket in hand. Kagiso Rabada was entrusted with closing out the game, but the over took a dramatic turn when he bowled two costly no-balls. Afghanistan capitalised on the lifeline, and despite a chaotic running error in the closing moments, they managed to level the scores and force a Super Over.

The first Super Over produced even more tension. Afghanistan seemed to have the advantage and were on the brink of victory, but South Africa’s Tristan Stubbs delivered under immense pressure, smashing a last-ball six to tie the Super Over and push the contest into a rare second decider.

In the second Super Over, the equation was steep: Afghanistan required four sixes from four deliveries. Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who had earlier lit up the match with a scintillating 84 off 42 balls in regulation time, nearly pulled off the extraordinary. He struck three towering sixes, bringing Afghanistan within touching distance of another tie. With just a boundary needed off the final ball to force a third Super Over, Gurbaz went for glory but hit straight to point, ending Afghanistan’s valiant charge.

A couple of metres either side, and the contest might have been extended yet again. Instead, South Africa emerged victorious from one of the most gripping matches of the tournament, while Afghanistan were left heartbroken after a performance that pushed their opponents to the absolute limit.
