Shanaka and Rathnayake Power Sri Lanka to 105-Run Rout of Oman

Dasun Shanaka and Pavan Rathnayake produced a blistering display of power-hitting as Sri Lanka overwhelmed Oman by 105 runs in a one-sided T20 World Cup clash in Pallekele.

Sri Lanka piled up 225, the highest total of this year’s tournament and their second-highest in T20 World Cup history, before restricting Oman to 120. The emphatic win marked Pallekele’s first fixture of the competition and underlined the hosts’ batting firepower.

Record-Breaking Assault

Shanaka smashed Sri Lanka’s fastest-ever T20I half-century, racing to his fifty in just 19 balls. Rathnayake was equally destructive, hammering 60 off 28 deliveries, while Kusal Mendis laid the foundation with a fluent 61 as Sri Lanka’s middle order dismantled Oman’s attack.

Oman struck early when Jay Odedra bowled Kamil Mishara, and Sufyan Mehmood trapped Pathum Nissanka in the sixth over. However, the wickets did little to stem the scoring. Even Nissanka’s dismissal came in an over that cost 16 runs, reflecting Sri Lanka’s relentless tempo.

After a brief lull following the powerplay, Oman's discipline faltered. Wasim Ali overstepped twice in a costly over, including on a free hit, which swung momentum decisively. Sri Lanka plundered 54 runs in a four-over burst to set the stage for late carnage.

By the 15th over, Sri Lanka were already cruising, but the real fireworks were yet to come. Shanaka, who had started cautiously with seven from his first seven balls, erupted spectacularly. He needed just 12 further deliveries to complete his fifty, surpassing his own national record. He launched Jiten Ramanandi for a six and a four before smashing Nadeem Khan for 20 in an over and taking 19 off Sufyan.

The final five overs yielded 79 runs — the most scored at the death in this tournament so far.

Oman Outclassed in Chase

Any hopes of a competitive chase were extinguished early. Dushmantha Chameera dismissed Jatinder Singh with the first ball of the innings, and Oman stumbled to 36 for 3 in the powerplay.

Maheesh Theekshana delivered a masterclass in spin bowling, finishing with 2 for 11 from his four overs — the most economical spell of this World Cup. He struck with his first delivery, trapping Aamir Kaleem lbw, and conceded just three runs in each of his powerplay overs.

Whenever Oman threatened a minor resurgence, Theekshana returned to snuff it out. After Dushan Hemantha was struck for two sixes by Wasim Ali, Theekshana was reintroduced and promptly had Wasim caught behind. He capped his spell with a remarkable one-run over.

Oman eventually limped to 120, with Mohammad Nadeem’s half-century — making him the oldest men’s T20 World Cup half-centurion — offering little more than a consolation.

Spin Leadership in Hasaranga’s Absence

Sri Lanka entered the tournament having lost Wanindu Hasaranga to injury, a significant blow to their campaign. In his absence, Theekshana has assumed senior spin duties and delivered a statement performance in Pallekele.
