Phil Salt Urges England to Respond in Must-Win Clash Against Scotland
Opener Phil Salt has called on England to channel the spirit of their 2022 triumph as they prepare for a must-win Group C encounter against Scotland in Kolkata.
England’s 30-run defeat to West Indies at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday has left them with no margin for error in the group stage. With victories required against Scotland and Italy to guarantee progression to the Super Eights, Salt insisted the team must focus on processes rather than outcomes.
“I think that’s the mark of all good teams,” Salt said. “When your back is against the wall, to come out and bring the best version of yourself. Obviously we did that in 2022 and we’ll look to do that again here.”
England famously rebounded from slow starts to win the ICC Men's T20 World Cup titles in 2010 and 2022, and Salt believes that experience can serve them well in the current campaign.
No Room for Complacency
Scotland arrive in confident mood after bouncing back from their own defeat to West Indies with a commanding win over Italy. Their previous T20 World Cup meeting with England — in Barbados in 2024 — saw Scotland race to 90 without loss in 10 overs before rain forced a washout.
Salt, who has faced several Scottish players in franchise competitions, warned against underestimating the opposition.
“They’re a good side. They’ve got a good attack and quite a lot of games under their belts as a collective. They’ve been in this position before, and I think they will put up a good fight,” he said.
Learning from the West Indies Loss
Reflecting on England’s unsuccessful chase of 197 against West Indies, Salt acknowledged teammate Harry Brook’s assessment that the side had been too “careful” in their approach.
“The overriding theme was exactly that — a little bit too careful, a little bit too tentative,” Salt admitted. “We know we’ve got to let ourselves go and trust ourselves for the rest of the competition.”
Salt himself provided a rapid start with 30 off 14 balls before falling to Romario Shepherd, but he indicated he would stick to his attacking blueprint of putting pressure back on bowlers.
Influence of Gautam Gambhir
Salt also highlighted the importance of adaptability in his development as a T20 batter, referencing his time at Kolkata Knight Riders under the guidance of Gautam Gambhir at Eden Gardens during the 2024 IPL.
“When I was here, GG was big on giving myself a few balls — not blocking, but being really smart,” Salt explained. “It was a big part of my improvement. Knowing my high-percentage shots, understanding where bowlers miss, and preparing accordingly.”
He added that detailed preparation — analysing data and opposition tendencies — allows him to play instinctively once in the middle.
With England’s campaign hanging in the balance, Salt’s message was clear: remove the fear of failure, trust preparation, and deliver their best when it matters most.
